China Manufacturing May Contract at Slower Pace, HSBC Index Says

Photo:   Bloomberg

China's manufacturing may contract at a slower pace in Jul after 2 interest-rate cuts & a rebound in lending spurred demand.  The preliminary reading was 49.5 for a purchasing managers' index from HSBC Holdings & Markit Economics.  If confirmed, that would be the highest since Feb.  In Jun, the final number was 48.2.  A slowdown triggered by weakness in exports, a crackdown on housing speculation & past monetary tightening has sent Chinese stocks to their lowest level since 2009.  Standard Chartered estimates expansion will rebound to above 8% in Q3 after sliding to a 7.6% rate in Q2.  A final reading below 50 would cap a 9-month run, the longest in the index’s 8-year history & surpassing the stretch from Aug 2008 - Mar 2009.  The gov monthly index, due to be released Aug 1, had a Jun reading that was the lowest since Nov.

China Manufacturing Gauge Shows Slowdown May Be Ebbing on Easing: Economy

Simon Property says a key measure of profitability grew 18% during Q2 thanks to higher rents & fuller malls.  It also raised its forecast for the year & lifted the div for the 4th straight qtr.  Funds from operations (used to determine divs), or FFO, climbed to $1.89 per share, up from $1.65 last year & topped the $1.81 forecast.  The company said that minimum rent per square foot rose nearly 4%, while the occupancy rate improved slightly, to 94.2%.  It owns or has a stake in 336 retail properties in North America & Asia which include The Galleria at White Plains in NY & Fashion Valley in San Diego.  The company raised its FFO per share guidance for the year by 10¢, to $7.60-$7.70 (analysts predict $7.63).  Revenue rose 14% to $1.19B from $1.04B, beating the forecast of $1.15B.  The quarterly div was raised 5¢ cents to $1.05 per share. The stock rose 1.66.

AT&T is seeing declining smartphone sales, leading to the best profitability ever in its wireless arm as it saves on phone subsidies. AT&T, a Dow stock & Dividend Aristocrat, posted the best profitability ever in its wireless arm, paradoxically because it sold fewer smartphones.  The largest telecommunications company in the US said its subscribers are now holding on to their phones longer with the rate of upgrades to new phones at a record low in Q2.  That's good news for the company because it subsidizes each smartphone to be able to sell it to customers for $99 or $199.  IPhones, in particular, are expensive to sell, because Apple (AAPL) charges AT&T around $650 for each one.  In Mar last year, AT&T started telling subscribers that they had to stay on contract for 20 months before they would be eligible for a new phone at the fully subsidized price.  Before that, some high-paying customers had been eligible for upgrades after just 12 months.  AT&T activated 5.1M smartphones in Q2, down from 5.5M last year, helping boost wireless operating income 18% to $4.9B.  Analysts still expect AT&T's profits to take a dive this fall, when the new iPhone comes out.  Strong wireless results helped boost EPS to 66¢ in Q2, up 8.7% from  60¢ last year.  Analysts expected EPS of 63¢. Revenue edged up 0.3% to $31.6B, just under the forecast of $31.7B.  If it weren't for the sale of its phone-books business in May, revenue would have risen 2%.  The stock fell 75¢.

There was buying in the last hour, limiting losses, but this remained another dreary day.  Tomorrow Greece has to justify to inspectors that it needs more loans to pay off loans to euro banks.  It will get the money, but this remains a confusing situation.  The Spanish debt picture is getting worse by the day & Italy is right behind Spain.  Back to the US, earnings along with guidance are not inspiring.  But stocks are holding up reasonably well.  Dow continues in its sideways trading range, somewhat of a good sign for the bulls.  Aug will begin next week & that can be a bad month, especially with an abundance of macro economic problems.

Orders for U.S. Durable Goods Probably Climbed

Photo:   Bloomberg

Durable goods orders climbed more than forecast in Dec, pointing to a rebound in business investment that could help support the US economy in early 2012.  Bookings for long-lasting goods advanced 3% after rising 4.3% in Nov, the biggest back-to-back gains in almost a year, according to the Commerce Dept.  Growing demand for raw materials from emerging markets & the need to replenish depleted inventories & update equipment are swelling order backlogs.  Combined with fewer layoffs & added confidence, the gains may help shield the US from a slowdown in Europe caused by the region’s debt crisis.  Orders climbed 10 % last year after a 15.5% gain in 2010.

3M, a Dow stock & Dividend Aristocrat, profit inched up 3% in Q4 as more demand for products for the home, office & automobile offset declining sales of high-tech products.  Growth in developing countries, where MMM now derives more than half of its sales, is slowing.  But MMM believes rapid growth in China & other emerging nations will resume in H2.   MMM is maintaining its current profit forecast for 2012 for EPS of $6.25-$6.50.  Analysts are predicting EPS of $6.33.  Q4 EPS was $1.35 compared with $1.28 in the prior year.  Revenue rose 6% to $7.09B.  The stock gained 1.10.

AT&T Sales Beat Estimates

Photo:   Bloomberg

AT&T, another Dow stock & Dividend Aristocrat, predicted 2012 earnings that trailed expectations as record demand for smartphones such as the iPhone drive up subsidy costs, projecting “mid-single-digit or better earnings growth” for 2012.  Analysts are predicting 11%.  ATT reported a Q4 loss of $6.7B because of a pretax charge of about $4B for the failed takeover of T-Mobile & expenses for revaluing benefit plans & other assets.  Activations of the iPhone soared to 7.6M in Q4, boosted by the new 4S model & a previous version offered for free with a contract.  ATT gained 717K subscribers on monthly contracts, more than the 574K projected.  Sales rose 3.6% to $32.5B.  The net loss was $1.12 a share, compared with a profit of 18¢ in the prior year.  EPS, excluding some items, fell to 42¢, under the 43¢ predicted.  Revenue at the wireless business increased 10% to $16.7B, boosted by web browsing &-mailing by smartphone users.  Smartphone subsidies helped reduce operating profit to 15.2% of sales from 22.9%.  Making money in the phone business is getting tougher.  The stock was off 76¢,

This was another uneventful day in the markets, but Jan has been a good month.  Dow is up 270 this week & over 500 in Jan.  Meanwhile, long term Treasuries & gold (traditional safe havens) are also having a good run in Jan.  Back to reality, debt relief talks were restarted in Greece.  Duhh!!  I think we heard that a week ago (or was it a month ago).  MLPs took a day off after their rise to new record highs.  The index is up 13 in Jan, not bad.  New record highs bring correspondingly lower yields, the index yield is below 6%.  However, with a low interest rate environment projected to last for years, maybe "only 6%" will be less of a problem.

AT&T Pulls $39 Billion T-Mobile Bid

Photo:   Bloomberg

AT&T, a Dow stock, is dropping ts effort to buy T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom.  The planned $39B acquisition was the biggest deal announced this year.  The collapse of deal leaves the 2nd-largest US mobile carrier with few attractive strategic options as it seeks to challenge market leader Verizon Wireless (VZ).   AT&T, a Dividend Aristocrat, is up 20¢ & yields 6%.

Housing starts & permits for future construction jumped to a 1½ year high in Nov as demand for rental apartments rose.  The Commerce Dept said housing starts surged 9.3% to an annual rate of 685K units, the highest since Apr last year.  This was ahead of a 635K rate forecasted & is up 24.3% from last year.  Although the overall housing market remains weak, rising demand for rental apartments is boosting the construction of multifamily homes.  Falling house values & stringent lending practices by banks are pushing buyers away from home ownership.  A full recovery for the sector, which was one of the main triggers of the 2007-09 recession, remains far off in the future given a glut of unsold homes, weak prices, high unemployment and tight credit.  Housing starts are still less than a third of their 2.3M rate peak 6 years ago.  Last month, housing starts for the volatile multi-family homes segment surged 25.3% to a 238K-unit rate, & groundbreaking for projects with 5 or more units hit the highest level since Sep 2008.  Single-family home construction, accounting for a large portion of the market, rose 2.3% to a 447K unit pace.  New building permits unexpectedly increased 5.7% to a 681K unit pace.  Permits were pushed up by a 13.9% jump in the multi-family segment.  Permits for buildings with 5 or more units were the highest since Oct 2008 & permits to build single-family homes rose only 1.6%.  Good news, but single family housing accounts for the bulk of the business & that remains very weak.

Builders in U.S. Start Construction on Most Houses in 19 Months: Economy

German business confidence rose unexpectedly for a 2nd month in Dec as 2 economic institutes predicted Europe's biggest economy will avoid a recession in 2012.  The Ifo business climate index climbed to 107.2 from 106.6 in Nov, beating predictions of a drop to 106.  Strengthening business confidence, along with a report today showing consumer confidence will hold its gains next month, adds to evidence that the strength of Germany’s economy has protected it from the worst of the debt crisis.  Investor sentiment unexpectedly rose for the first time in 10 months in Dec & measures of manufacturing and services activity also increased.  This "good news" are responsible for some of today's rally in US stock markets.

German Business Confidence Rises as Nation Set to Avoid Recession: Economy

I'm not sure what all the excitement is about for today's big market rally.  The housing news is not that great since improvement comes from new apartments, not new single family housing.  Euphoria over the German economic news is because Germany is a big source of funds for bailout money.  But problems from the European debt mess have not gone away.  The politicos in DC are using Scotch-Tape to deal with extending lower Social Security taxes & unemployment benefits, which is a negative for solving enormous gov deficits that are now considered routine.  The Dow chart shows it continues to limp along near 12K.  Maybe this won't be a dull pre-holiday week of trading.
