The € strengthened to a 2 week high ($1.29 vs a low of $1.27) as Spain raised more than its maximum target at a debt sale, boosting optimism the sovereign-debt crisis is being contained.  But Greece is headed into a 2nd day of talks with private creditors to reach an accord on lowering its debt levels.

Euro countries won't increase support for Greece if it fails to secure a bond-swap deal with private creditors.  Foreign Minister Venizelos's remarks came hours before he held a 2nd day of talks with banking negotiators to reach a deal aimed at slashing the country's debt by €100B ($130B) as Greece faces a renewed threat of defaulting on its debts with a €14.5B repayment looming in 2 months.  "If there is a (financing) gap, this would have to be covered by a larger contribution from the official sector — that means the eurozone countries, directly or indirectly. And at this point, I do not see any willingness or readiness to increase that contribution," Venizelos said.  "So there must be no gap, and the Private Sector Involvement is very important."  Talks between the gov & representatives of private investors broke down last Fri amid disagreements over the interest rate to be paid for the new, lower-valued bonds.  Talks restarted Wed with a new proposal, including on interest rates. The IIF, representing private bondholders, now suggests an interest rate below 4% that increases gradually until 2020.  How high the interest rate would go was not specified.

  • EBay sales & profit topped estimates, buoyed by a campaign to promote its expanded retail offerings & broader use of the PayPal online-payments service.  Q4 revenue rose 35% to $3.38 B, beating the forecast of  $3.32B.  Profit excluding certain items was 60¢, compared with 57¢ forecasted.  CEO Donahoe boosted spending for marketing 25% last year & upgraded technology to lure back users who defected to rivals.  EBay is also getting a lift as PayPal challenges traditional payment systems by persuading a larger pool of shoppers to use it more often & for bigger purchases.  The company benefited from a 15% gain in total holiday e-commerce spending, which rose to a record $37.2B.  At PayPal, its fastest-growing division, revenue rose 28% & registered users jumped to 106M.  The unit is expanding its roster of merchant partners, taking aim at Visa (V) & MasterCard (MA).  PayPal’s mobile payment volume will rise to $7B, up from $4B.  The stock rose 1.17 (4%).

Consumer Prices in U.S. Little Changed

    Photo:   Bloomberg

The CPI was little changed in Dec for a 2nd month as stores cut prices to boost holiday sales & fuel expenses fell.  The unchanged reading, from the Labor Dept, compared with a forecast of a 0.1% gain.  Excluding food & fuel costs, the core rose 0.1% (as projected).  Consumer prices increased 3% in the 12 months ended in Dec, the biggest annual gain since 2007.

Stocks had a tepid rise given fairly good earnings by banks & favorable economic reports.  I sense a lot of analysts are upgrading their forecasts for the new year (like they did a year ago).  There is talk about much more easing by the Federal Reserve, maybe coming within a week.  With the economy doing fairly well, not sure what it good it will do besides raising stock prices.  Housing needs help the most & record low mortgage rates are not bringing out buyers.  Dow is up 400 YTD with tailwinds even though there are worries, starting with Greece.  But the bulls are in charge.  What can I say?

EBay (EBAY) will pay $2.4B for GSI Commerce (GSIC), which operates websites for retailers like Toys R Us & Bath & Body Works.  GSIC runs websites, packs & ships products & offers interactive marketing services to a variety of retailers. It has long-term contracts with 180 retailers, including Radio Shack, Ace Hardware & American Eagle Outfitters.  EBAY hopes the acquisition will bolster its ability to connect buyers & sellers around the world. In addition, it could also help EBAY become more of a threat to Amazon (AMZN).  Lots of businesses need help doing things like generating demand for products, running their websites, delivering goods to customers & growing mobile sales. GSIC does this for large companies & EBAY & PayPal do this for small to medium-sized companies.  EBAY will pay $29.25 per share, a 51% premium over GSI's prior closing price. The $2.4B total is the 2nd-largest amount eBay has paid for another company (in 2005 EBAY paid $2.6B for Skype, which it has since sold).  The deal should close in Q3. EBAY said 2011 EPS will be 30-34¢ lower than its earlier outlook (in Jan, it had forecast EPS of $1.56-1.61) but adjusted EPS won't be affected (the company had forecasted $1.90-1.95).  EBAY expects the acquisition to add to EPS in 2012.  EBAY fell $1.36 to $30.34 & GSIC jumped $9.82 to just under the offering price.

Acer, the world’s 2nd- largest maker of personal computers fell 6.9%, the most in 2 weeks in Taipei, after the company lowered its forecast for Q1 sales.  Q1 revenue from personal computers may fall about 10% from the previous qtr because of “relatively weaker” demand in Western Europe & the US. The company said Q2 sales are expected to be little changed from Q1, attributed to possible supply disruptions caused by the earthquake in Japan.  In Feb, Acer said Q1 shipments & sales would rise 3% from Q4 2010.  Asustek Computer (maker of this netbook) fell 5.7% & Compal Electronics dropped 5.2% on fears that they are among electronic companies that may cut their forecasts because of possible component shortages. These won't be the only companies to be affected.

There was another tech merger besides EBAY.  Merger Mon lived up to its reputation, but that didn't help stocks.  Q1 ends on Thurs, making it difficult to understand fluctations as fund managers adjust portfolios.  On the good side, nothing significant was decided in trading.  But we haven't heard the last about supply disruptions & other types of problems from Japanese companies.

Financially-stricken Greece had an even bigger budget deficit for 2009 than previously thought, at a time the country is considering whether to tap a bailout facility from the eurozone & the IMF. Greece's budget deficit in 2009 (as a percentage of economic output) was 13.6%, up from the previous estimate of 12.9% & nearly double the 7.7% in 2008. Greece's total gov debt as a proportion of GDP stands at a massive 115.1%, a burden so large that it could have trouble paying it over coming years even after a bailout this year. There are fears that the Greek figures may be even worse, citing "uncertainties" from figures related to social security funds & complex financial swap arrangements. Greece had its credit rating cut one grade to 4 grades above junk debt by Moody’s Investors Service, as the gov debt servicing costs surge.

Home sales rose more than expected in Mar, reversing 3 months of declines, as expiring gov incentives drew buyers. Sales of previously occupied homes rose 6.8% to an annual rate of 5.35M in Mar, the highest level since Dec. Sales had been expected to rise 5.2-5.28M. Results show the housing market is stabilizing after a devastating bust. The median sales price was $171K, up almost 4% from a month earlier & nearly unchanged from $170K in Mar 2009. The inventory of unsold homes was up 1.5% to 3.6M, an 8 month supply at the current sales pace. The broad based recovery is viewed as fairly good, but the true test will be whether the market can stand on its own after federal tax credits expire at the end of Apr. Foreclosure filings rose 16% in Q1 from a year earlier & bank seizures reached a record

Strong sales at PepsiCo (PEP), a Dividend Aristocrat, of snacks & drinks in developing markets helped Q1 profits rise 26%, beating analyst estimates. Sales of snacks & beverages posted double-digit gains in India & China, but beverage sales volume was soft in the US & Europe as shoppers reduced spending & switched to juices & teas. In Q1, PEP earned 89¢ per share, beating estimates of 75¢. Revenue climbed 13% to $9.37B, while the volume of products sold rose only 1%. But the stock dropped 1.33.

The Greek debt problems is very troubling. Latest headlines out of Greece are gloomy, reporting the yield on their 10-year bond shot up to 9% (a 12 year high). The € sold off again, to below $1.33 (barely above the low of $1.32 reached last month). Now the markets have to worry about what the pres will say in NYC about increased regulation for banks.
