The blizzard that swept through the northeast delayed $1B in retail spending, according to ShopperTrak. But, it says that won't derail a holiday shopping season expected to be the best since 2007.  The effect won't be as bad as last year's pre-Christmas snowstorm that similarly paralyzed parts of the East Coast costing retailers an estimated $2B.  About $10B in retail sales usually occurs Dec 26-27 & bad weather likely delayed about 10% of that. ShopperTrak's still estimating for a 4% gain over last year in revenue for Nov 1-Dec 31. Retailers are hoping to see much of the spending when shoppers return to stores as streets are cleared & transportation restored.  This year's storm cost retailers 11.2% of their foot traffic Sun & 13.9% on Mon.  Dec 26 should rank 10th-busiest day of the holiday shopping season. Last year, it was 2nd-busiest behind Black Friday.  Stores will report results next week & Dec auto sales are also due.

Constellation Energy Partners (CEP) is an MLP which has been left behind in the enormous MLP rally over the last 2 years.  But it's still alive. The borrowing base just reestablished by lenders was $195M.  CEP has $26½M available under the line & the company had $18.2M cash on hand in early Dec.  In addition CEP acquired, from a private seller, non-operated oil properties in northern Kansas & southern Nebraska for approximately $5.9M. The properties currently produce approximately 126 barrels of oil equivalent per day from 36 wells with proved reserves estimated to be 170K barrels of oil equivalent.  81% is classified as proved developed producing. The transaction closed Dec 21, 2010 & was purchased with cash on hand.  Risk takers who are willing to wait for the company to resume distributions might be interested in CEP at less than $3.

Volume was slow again at only 0.5B on the NYSE floor.  As a frame of reference, 1B shares is generally considered low.  Low yields have driven investors to higher yielding stocks in Dec.  But they have not been buying junk funds & have only been buying REITs to a limited degree.  MLPs have had a modest advance.  Old fashioned stocks have done the best as reflected in the Dow which has risen 5¼%.  It's hard to believe, but volume could be even slower tomorrow.

Samsung to Unveil Media Player, Take on IPod Touch

Samsung will unveil a digital media player next month that can play video, take photos & connect to the internet, aimed at competing with touch-screen devices from Apple (AAPL).  The “Galaxy Player,” powered by Android software from Google (GOOG), has a front-facing camera that allows users to have video chats & upload photos online using wireless networks.  The new product will directly compete with the iPod Touch & help Samsung lure a wider range of customers with a brand name it established.  Its Galaxy S smartphone has sold more than 8M units globally since it began selling in Jun.  Are you listening AAPL stockholders?  In all fairness next week is the CES show in Las Vegas when AAPL (along with the competition) will announce new electronics products for the US.   AAPL was up a fraction to the 326s, another record.

Groupon, the online-coupon site that spurned a $6B offer from GOOG this month, has filed to raise up to $950M from the sale of preferred shares after it amended its certificate of incorporation, allowing it to issue 30.1M shares of Series G preferred stock at a price of $31.59 a share, according to a Dec 17 filing. The financing could value Groupon at $8B.  Founded in 2008, Groupon offers daily group discounts on restaurants, theme parks, clothes, manicures & other consumer items & has amassed more than 35M users.  Groupon employs 3K, most in sales.  Groupon will make a decision next year on whether & how soon to proceed with an IPO.  Popular stock offerings are good for the stock market.

Listless markets are drifting in the absence of significant new news.  Volume is very low, making it difficult to learn much about the markets.  Next week will be the new year.  Traditionally Jan is a good month for stocks as a reaction to selling in Dec along with added money flowing into retirements accounts.  But this year Dec was an outstanding month, making it difficult to for the bullish argument.

Oil traded near a 26 month high after a report showed US retailers had their best holiday sales in 5 years & crude supplies were forecast to extend their biggest monthly decline since Dec 2006.  Cold weather in the north increases demand for oil & gas.  Gold rose the most in 7 weeks on speculation that Europe’s debt crisis will spread, boosting demand for the precious metal as a haven asset.

Treasuries slid after a $35B auction of 5 year securities attracted the lowest demand in 6 months. The 10-year yield rose a very big 13 basis points to 3.48%.  Treasuries extended losses after the auction drew a yield of 2.149% & the bid-to-cover ratio was 2.61X, the lowest since Jun. US debt due in more than a year is headed for the biggest monthly loss in global gov bond markets amid signs that the economy is strengthening, reducing demand for investments viewed as less risky.  The 2 year Treasury yield shot up 7 basis points to 0.75% & the yield on the existing 5 year note increased 13 basis points to 2.15%.  Among other factors were higher oil prices (at their highest levels in more than 2 years).

Enbrdige Energy (EEP), a major MLP, shut its Spearhead crude oil pipeline early today because of maintenance. The Spearhead line, which mostly transports heavy Canadian oil in the central US, is expected to return to service late today. EEP said earlier that the line will carry 174K barrels a day in Jan, about 20% of the shipment requests for the month. The Spearhead line spans 657 miles (1,058 kilometers) from Chicago to Cushing, Oklahoma.  This was reported as coming from Enbridge, Inc (ENB), the Canadian General Partner for EEP, but EEP operates the pipeline.  This pipeline was restarted 2 weeks ago after fixing problems with the pipeline in the last few months.  EEP was up 49¢ but has plateaued in recent months.

The Shanghai Composite Index slid to a 3 month low on concern over higher Chinese interest rates.  When traders return next week, that might affect US markets.  Weaker demand for Treasuries at auction caused rates to shoot up today, not good going forward.  Gold is within 2% of its record, reached at the start of Dec, on increased worries over European sovereign debts.  Trading was slooooow, there's no other way to describe it when the NYSE floor volume is ½B shares.  The rest of the week could be even slower.

Consumer Confidence in U.S. Unexpectedly Falls on Jobs

Photo:  Bloomberg

Consumer confidence slipped this month as more people worried that the job market is worsening.  The latest survey from Conference Board showed a decline even after people increased their holiday spending at the biggest rate in 4 years.  The Consumer Confidence Index fell to 52.5 in Dec, down from a revised 54.3 in Nov & below expectations of 55.8. The decline reverses 2 consecutive months of increases. It takes a reading of 90 to indicate a healthy economy, not approached since the recession began in 2007.  The declines come even though economic indicators suggest layoffs are slowing, businesses are buying more goods & consumers are spending more money. Economists are raising growth forecasts for Q4 & 2011.  One measure of the Confidence Index, which assesses how shoppers feel now about the economy, declined to 23.5 from 25.4 in Nov. The other barometer, measuring how shoppers feel about the economy over the next 6 months, fell to 71.9 from 73.6 in Nov  However consumer confidence is no worse off today than it was a year ago with the outlook remaining cautious.  This contrasts to preliminary figures from Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan which showed a climb to a 6 month high in Dec. Nothing like a little confusion to sort thru.  The latest storm related problems are not going to help.

Holiday sales jumped 5.5%, the best performance in 5 years.  Retail sales, excluding autos, rose to $584B from Nov 5-Dec 24, said MasterCard Advisors.  Spending Pulsewhich, measures retail sales by all payment forms, said sales had a 4.1% gain from a year earlier (including sales made over the Web).  Last-minute Christmas shoppers pushed sales at stores open at least a year up 4.8% in the week ended Dec 25, the strongest year-over-year gain since Apr according to the International Council of Shopping Centers.  It said sales for the Nov-Dec period will rise 4% or more which compares with a previous forecast of 3.5-4.0%.  Apparel sales grew the fastest in the 50 days before Christmas, with an 11% gain, more than 10 times the pace of last year (helped by cold weather in Dec).  Luxury sales rose 6.7%, compared with only 0.9% a year ago. Consumer electronics sales increased 1.2% after falling 4.6% a year earlier.  Results look to be good enough, but are short of sensational.  This week could be poor with weak performance by stores in the eastern US.

U.S. Retailers' Holiday Sales Increase 5.5%, Most Since 2005

Usually little happens during this holiday week.  Many traders & investors are waiting for the new year before making commitments.  The move by China yesterday to tighten monetary policy will affect countries all over the world as China has become a major player in the global economy.  It could have brought out more buyers for gold which is just a few dollars from setting another record.  The storm in the east along with this being a slow week could cause distortions one way or the other in the jobless data on Thurs.
