Caterpillar Raises 2012 Forecast as Construction Demand Climbs

Photo:   Bloomberg

Caterpillar, a Dow stock, raised 2012 profit forecast & said that despite pockets of weakness, the global economy was improving.  The strong outlook came after profits easily beat expectations.  Fiscal improvement is still needed in Asia, Latin America & North America, but steps toward a healthier global economy have already begun, CEO Oberhelman said.  "While we're expecting a record year in 2012, we understand the world is facing economic challenges, and if it becomes necessary, we are prepared to act quickly," Oberhelman said.  "The good news is, this doesn't feel like 2008."  EPS was $2.54, sharply ahead of $1.52 last year & beat the forecast of  $2.28.  Revenue rose 21% to $17.4B, better than the $17.11B expected.  The company expects to EPS of $9.60 in 2012, up from a previous forecast of $9.50 & a head of $9.54 projected by analysts.  The stock rose 1.73.

Sales of new single-family homes fell 8.4% in Jun to an annual rate of 350K after reaching a 2-year high in May, according to the Commerce Dept.  This was below expectations of 375K.  Sales in May were revised up to 382K from an initial reading of 369K, the best month since Apr 2010.  The median price of new homes fell 1.9% to $232K, the lowest level since Jan.  The supply of new homes on the market would last 4.3 months if they were all sold before any others were built, up from 4.0 months in May.  Sales of new homes rose the fastest in the Northeast & fell the most in the South.  The housing recovery keeps giving mixed messages.

Boeing Boosts Forecast Amid 27% Gain in Aircraft Deliveries

Photo:   Bloomberg

Boeing, a Dow stock, surprised expectations on strong sales of commercial airplanes & the company raised its earnings forecast for the year.  This performance highlighted strong growth in the commercial airplane unit which has been rapidly increasing the pace of production to meet demand.  EPS rose to $1.27, compared with $1.25 last year.  Revenue jumped 21% to $20B from $16.5B a year ago.  Analysts expected EPS of $1.13 on revenue of $19.28B.  Defense revenue rose 7%, while revenue in the commercial airplane division jumped 34%. The divisions are roughly the same size, but they tend to go in opposite directions.  The commercial airplane unit is speeding production of its new 787.  BA is also booking firm orders for its new 737 Max, a redesigned version of its classic 737.  Higher costs somewhat overshadowed strong results in both segments as expenses rose 30%.  For 2012, BA expects EPS of $4.40-$4.60, up from previous guidance of $4.15-$4.35.  Still, that new forecast is mostly under analysts' predictions of $4.57.  The stock rose 1.25.

Markets should have been encouraged by favorable earnings reports from big industrials.  But Apple (AAPL) had a big miss last night.  Sales & earnings were great year over year, but sequential sales, especially for iPhone, came in below expectations.  It also raised fears about markets maturing (to some extent).  The stock dropped 29 which has a big impact on NAZ & also sends a bearish signal for the over all markets.  Fundamental problems in Europe, China & a mushy US economy are weighing more heavily on the markets.

Euro Touches 2-Year Low

Photo:   Bloomberg

The € fell to its lowest level in 2 years as regional finance ministers gather in Brussels to discuss crisis-fighting measures adopted by heads of gov at a summit last month.  The currency erased its intraday drop as the European Commission said future recapitalizations of banks by rescue funds wouldn’t require gov guarantees.  Spanish & Italian bonds fell (sending Spanish yields back over the troubling 7% level) amid concern finance ministers will fail to agree on sufficient crisis-fighting measures.  Recapitalizations of banks by the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) will have “no need for a sovereign guarantee,” a commission spokesman said.  Details of how the future system will work remain to be negotiated.  The €, while off its lows, is still under $1.23 signalling a lack of confidence in solving euro debt problems.

A deputy labor minister resigned from Greece's new coalition gov, saying it should have pressed harder to renegotiate the terms of the country's bailout agreements.  Nikos Nikolopoulos announced his resignation hours after the new conservative-led gov won a confidence vote in parliament.  In a letter, he argued that the gov should have taken a tougher line with intl debt inspectors last week to "correct serious distortions in the labor, pension and benefit systems."  Known as the troika, the inspectors from the EU, ECB & IMF, have carried out frequent visits to Greece to check on the state of its struggling public finances.  Nikolopoulos was considered a close ally of conservative Prime Minister Samaras, who named a replacement shortly after the resignation was announced.  A gov spokesman said the gov was puzzled by the resignation, adding "There is no logical explanation. Mr. Nikolopoulos had no time to argue with his minister. And negotiations with the troika haven't even started.". "Yesterday, he backed the government in a vote of confidence. In the end, not everyone is cut out for tough jobs."  Can you spell, "confusion?"

Boeing, a Dow stock, clinched the first big deal of this year's Farnborough Airshow with an order from Air Lease for 75 of its redesigned 737 aircraft worth $7.2B.  The order is a big win for BA & is the first order for the MAX, a new version of its best-selling 737 aircraft, by a leasing company.  "They are an ideal partner to help establish the 737 MAX in the leasing market," said Ray Conner, Boeing Commercial Airplanes president.  The MAX incorporates new technologies designed to make the aircraft more efficient, reliable & comfortable & BA has secured orders & commitments for more than 1K of the aircraft.  Expectations are high that BA will clinch more deals for the plane as it tries to catch up with rival Airbus in orders for single-aisle aircraft.  The stock gained 45¢.

Orders for U.S. Durable Goods Drop by the Most in Three Years

Photo:   Bloomberg

Orders for durable goods in the US fell in Mar, the most in 3 years, indicating manufacturing could contribute less to growth this year.  Bookings dropped 4.2%, the biggest decrease since Jan 2009, after a revised 1.9% gain the prior month, according to the Commerce Dept.  The forecast was for a 1.7% decline.  Slowdowns in Europe & China may limit exports, while business investment cools after the strongest 10-qtr performance in a decade, leading to a slowdown in manufacturing.  But improving sales led by pent-up demand for autos, are supporting companies in the US.  Orders for durables excluding transportation equipment decreased 1.1% after a 1.9% advance.  They were projected to rise 0.5%.  Demand for transportation equipment dropped 12.5%, the most since Nov 2010, led by a 48% plunge in civilian aircraft bookings.  Bookings for automobiles & parts increased 0.1% after a 2% rise the previous month.

Caterpillar, a Dow stock, profit rose 29% in Q1 & beat expectations as the company relied on its growing mining business & sales to buyers looking to replace aging equipment.  It increased profit guidance for the 2012, but the new forecast may not be strong enough to comfort concerns over the state of the global economy.  CAT is utilizing its strength in the mining business, bolstered by the 2011 acquisition of Bucyrus along with healthy commodity prices, to ride out softening conditions in emerging markets & a weak construction market.  In addition, North American customers are scrambling to replace aging machinery.  "We remain on track...at a time when construction activity remains depressed and economies in Europe, China and Brazil have slowed," CEO Oberhelman said.  "Although it's tough to predict the exact timing, we expect positive economic growth moving forward."  The slowing in China & Brazil comes as those countries "took steps in 2011 to slow their economies and bring inflation under control," Oberhelman said.  Both economies are expected to ease their policies, Caterpillar said.  EPS was $2.37 (the highest on record), compared with $1.84 last year.  Sales rose 23% to $16B.  Analysts projected EPS of $2.13, however revenue fell short of the $16.2B expected.  The company increased EPS outlook for 2012 to $9.50 from $9.25 previously.  The revenue outlook was kept at $68-$70B.  The backlog continued to grow, ending at $30.7B versus $21B last year.  The stock fell 2.76.

Boeing, a Dow stock, posted higher-than-expected quarterly profit, helped by an increase in commercial airplane deliveries & it raised its earnings forecast for 2012.  Production is being raised on commercial airplanes to meet increased demand while battling defense budget constraints.  EPS in Q1 rose to $1.22 from 78¢ last year.  Excluding a gain from resolved litigation, EPS was $1.11, beating the estimate of 94¢.  The company, which competes with Airbus for orders, said revenue rose 30% to $19.4B, topping expectations for $18.4B.  The order backlog increased to $380B, from $356B at the beginning of the year.  The company raised the upper end of its 2012 EPS forecast to $4.35 from $4.25 while keeping the low end at $4.15.  It affirmed its 2012 revenue outlook of $78-$80B.  The stock rose 2.26.

This week, earnings have been behind moves in the stock markets.  Yesterday, Dow stocks ATT (T), UnitedTech (UTX) & 3M (MMM) reported good earnings.  After the close AAPL got all the attention with another great report.  But it was not all rosy.  iPad sales were just shy of the estimate & the Mac business is weak.  China accounted for $8B in sales (much of it from iPhones).  But the market was happy.  Dow is back over 13K, good but with less vigor than I would have expected given these earnings reports.  Dow is where is was 6 weeks ago.
