Mixed markets after FedEx profit warning

Dow was up 16, decliners just ahead of advancers & NAZ fell 5.  The Financial Index did little in the 203s.  The MLP index fell 3 to 397 & the REIT index was off a fraction in the 268s.  Junk bond funds were mixed & Treasuries were up a tad.  Oil & gold were even, although oil is pushing on $100 (bad for the economy) & gold is near $1700, a 6 month high.

FedEx Sees First Earnings Drop Since 2009 as Economy Slows

Photo:   Bloomberg

FedEx cut its earnings forecast, putting the blame on a weak global economy.  The world's 2nd-biggest package delivery company said the shortfall is primarily in its express division, which moves 3.5M packages on an average day.  That indicates customers have continued to switch from overnight air delivery to slower, cheaper methods.  Poor economic conditions in Europe & slowing growth elsewhere, including Asia, have forced the shifts.  FDX expects EPS of $1.37-$1.43 in its fiscal Q1 that ended Aug 31, down from an original forecast of $1.45-$1.60.  Analysts were expecting $1.56.  Both FDX & larger rival UPS (UPS) have warned about the impact of slower economic growth on their results.  FDX revenue grew just 3% at the express division in Q1.  Operating income dropped $148M, largely due to a charge for the retirement of some aircraft, but a 3% decline in package volume also hurt results. The stock is down 1.23, but off its lows.

ECB President Mario Draghi

Photo:   Bloomberg

It is being reported that ECB President Mario Draghi's bond-buying proposal involves unlimited purchases of gov debt that will be sterilized to assuage concerns about printing money.  Under the blueprint, “Monetary Outright Transactions,” the ECB would refrain from setting a public cap on yields.  The plan will only focus on gov bonds rather than a broader range of assets & will target short-dated maturities of up to 3 years.  The € jumped half a penny to $1.26.  Draghi told the European Parliament this week that the ECB needs to intervene in bond markets to wrest back control of interest rates in the fragmented euro-area economy & ensure the survival of the currency.  Policy makers will start deliberating on the plan later today & Draghi will announce results tomorrow.  They are likely to adopt the proposal, with Germany's Bundesbank remaining the sole objector.

Productivity in U.S. Grew More Than Forecast

Photo:   Bloomberg

US companies got more output from their workers this spring than initially thought.  Productivity rose at a modest 2.2% annual rate in Q2, largely because employers cut back sharply on hiring.  The Labor Dept said that productivity in Q2 was better than its initial estimate of a 1.6% gain.  The main reason for the increase was the gov revised growth in Q2 to an annual rate of 1.7%, up from an initial estimate of 1.5%.  That led to more output, which boosted productivity.  Labor costs rose at an annual rate of 1.5%, slightly lower than the 1.7% initially estimated.  Rising productivity can boost corp profits. But it can also slow job creation if it means companies are getting more from their current staff & don't need to add workers.  Over the past year, productivity has risen 1.2%, far below the 3% average productivity growth turned in during 2009 & 2010.  Those gains were a result of massive job layoffs during the recession as companies slashed costs in the face of falling demand.

Productivity in U.S. Grows More Than Previously Estimated

Markets are doing little which is favorable given the downward bias associated with this month.  Tomorrow we will hear what the biggies in Europe decide on how to fight their financial problems.  From its low at the end of Jul, the € is up a nickel.  At least it's slide has ended for the time being.  Fri is the big Aug jobs report & expectations are not high.  Dow continues to hold above 13K.

Rival Greek party leaders launched a second day of talks on Tuesday in an attempt to quickly form a pro-bailout coalition government, after the debt-crippled country's second inconclusive election in six weeks. Antonis Samaras' New Democracy party came first in Sunday's vote, winning 129 of Parliament's 300 seats — not enough for him to govern alone. A coalition gov could be formed by tomorrow in Greece according to the head of the country's socialist party, easing the nation out of a political limbo as it struggles to deal with a financial crisis that is already affecting markets around the world.  Evangelos Venizelos' socialist PASOK party came 3rd in the elections.  At the core of any administration will be Antonis Samaras' conservative New Democracy party, which came first & won 129 of Parliament's 300 seats, short of the 151 needed to govern alone.  The radical left Syriza party in 2nd place, with 71 seats, has refused to join any gov that will implement the terms of Greece's bailout.  Venizelos, who handled Greece's negotiations with its intl creditors for several months last year as finance minister, said the gov would have the support of the election winner, PASOK & the small Democratic Left party of Fotis Kouvelis, which won 17 seats.  "With Syriza's refusal, the only practical solution now is the creation of a government with the support of New Democracy, PASOK, and the Democratic Left," he said after several hours of negotiations. "I repeat that this government must be formed as soon as possible. As now things stand, this can be achieved by mid-day tomorrow."  His party, he said, "will support this government sincerely and will participate in it in the most beneficial way in order to make it effective and credible."  "The most important issue is not the government's composition, but the national negotiating team that will strive to achieve the best possible revision of the loan agreement so that we can keep all the positives and to counter the recession and unemployment and to bring positive growth and jobs," Venizelos said.  This is still far from a done deal.

FedEx expects slow global economic growth will crimp its earnings over the next 12 months & the company is making significant cost cuts to counter any drop in package shipments.  FDX is closely watched for signs about the health of the economy.  It forecast moderate growth for both the US & global economies, citing the debt crisis in Europe & slowing growth in Asia.  It forecast for fiscal Q1 fell below expectations & its range for the year fell mostly below forecasts.  FDX faces a number of speed bumps, including higher salaries & pension costs, as well a shift by customers to cheaper shipping options to save money.  The company predicts fiscal year 2013 EPS of $6.90-$7.40.  That excludes the major cost reductions it plans to announce in the fall.  Analysts expect EPS of $7.39.  FDX is calling for 2.2% economic growth in the US for a calendar 2012, slightly above the 2.1% it predicted 3 months ago, & it sees that rising to 2.4%.  In the latest qtr, EPS was $1.73, compared with $1.75 a year earlier.  Revenue rose to $11B from $10.55B a year ago.  Without the charge to retire planes, FedEx earned $1.99 per share, 4¢ better than the estimate.  FDX earned 6% more per package in the US despite a 5% decline in total shipments.  It credited that to growth in its overnight service & higher customer charges for fuel. Intl priority shipment revenue rose 3%, while volume fell 3% as growth in Asia slowed.  The stock rose 2.50.

Microsoft Unveils Surface Tablet Computer, Taking on IPad

Photo:   Bloomberg

Microsoft, a Dow stock, unveiled its own Windows-powered tablet computer called Surface, altering its strategy of focusing on software & relying on partners to make the machines in a renewed attempt to take on the Apple (AAPL) iPad.  The tablet has a 10.6" display & will run the new version of Microsoft’s operating system.  The device’s cover serves as a full keyboard with a track pad. Surface will be available later this year.  The new strategy by MSFT threatens to sour its relationship with some PC makers, many of which have been investing to develop their own Windows 8 tablets & may not want to compete directly with Microsoft.  The stock was up 86¢.

The € slipped back a fraction to under $1.27, but has a modest gain in Jun as financial tensions in Europe have been reduced.  Greece is trying to get its act together, although even if it seemingly does, this is only a first step in solving major problems.  The Federal Reserve is meeting with the bulls hoping it will pull a rabbit out to the hat to help the US economy.  Haven't heard much about the G-20 meeting, but it has a lot on its plate.  Dow had another good day, but sellers took over in the last 2 hours, pulling it down 63 from its intra day highs.

The number claiming new unemployment benefits dropped to a 4-year low last week.  Initial claims fell 5K to 348K, the lowest level since Feb 2008, according to the Labor Dept.  The prior week's figure was revised up to 353K from the previously reported 351K.  The 4-week moving average declined 1K to 355K.  The Federal Reserve has said it expects the jobless rate to "gradually" decline.  The number still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid fell 9K to 3.35M in the latest week, the lowest since Aug 2008.  Despite the improving labor market picture, long-term unemployment remains a major problem, 43% of the 12.8M out of work in Feb had been jobless for more than 6 months.  The number on emergency unemployment benefits dropped 24K to 2.85M in the latest week.  A total of 7.28M were claiming unemployment benefits under all programs, down 142K from the prior week.

Euro-Area Services, Manufacturing Shrink

Photo:   Bloomberg

Euro-area services & manufacturing output contracted more than forecasted in Mar, adding to signs the economy has slipped into recession.  A euro-area composite index dropped to 48.7 from 49.3 in Feb, London-based Markit Economics said.  The forecast had been for a gain to 49.6.  A reading below 50 indicates contraction.  Europe's economy may struggle to regain strength after shrinking 0.3% in Q4 as goves toughen budget cuts, rising oil prices erode consumers’ purchasing power & global demand weakens.  In the UK, retail sales fell more than forecast in Feb. Ireland’s economy slipped back into a recession in Q4 & Chinese manufacturing contracted this month.  A gauge of euro-region manufacturing fell to 47.7 in Mar from 49 in Feb, Markit said, & a measure of services declined to 48.7 from 48.8.  Companies cut employment levels for the 3rd month in a row, while a gauge of new business decreased for an 8th month, today’s report showed.  Gloomy news out of Europe.

FedEx profit from Dec-Feb more than doubled on higher package volume & prices.  In its fiscal Q3, EPS was $1.65, compared with 73¢ a year earlier.  Excluding one-time items, EPS was $1.55 compared with 81¢ a year earlier & beat expectations.  Revenue rose 9% to $10.6B.  FDX is narrowing its forecast for the fiscal year ending in May.  It now expects EPS of $6.43-$6.68 compared with $6.25-$6.75 previously given.   FDX said the global economy isn't growing as strongly as expected & customers are reacting by choosing cheaper means of shipping packages.  As a result it's predicting a slower pace of growth this year for the US & abroad than most economists.  CFO Graf said the current economic environment & higher fuel prices are driving more customers to "trade down" or choose slower methods of shipping to save money, just like they did during the recession.  The stock fell $3.85 (4%) on the mixed messages.

The global economies are sputtering more than had been expected.  Nothing serious at this stage, but not a welcome sign by the markets.  The jobless data should have given the markets a big lift, but worldwide thoughts took center stage.  Today's spill is taking the Dow close to the 13K level which had been an important ceiling for so long.   Bulls want it to hold for obvious reasons.
