Markets drift lower on Euro concerns

Dow slid 2, decliners just ahead of advancers & NAZ fell 12.  The Financial Index was down a fraction in the 198s.  The MLP index rose 1+ to the 394s & the REIT index was up a fraction in the 267s.  Junk bond funds were mixed to lower & Treasuries rebounded as investors await details from European leaders on how they plan to support struggling countries in the region like Spain.  Gold inched higher, helped by uncertainty coming from Europe.

China plans to increase railway spending & the State Council called for private investment in utilities & health care as Premier Wen Jiabao tries to reverse an economic slowdown.  The Ministry of Railways, the nation’s largest corporate debt issuer, plans to spend 470B yuan ($74B) on railroads & bridges this year, the 2nd increase in Jul, for a combined gain of about 14% from the previous figure.  The new target exceeds last year’s 461B yuan in spending & follows Wen’s Jul 10 comments that promoting investment growth is the key now to stabilizing an expansion that decelerated to 7.6% in Q2, a 3-year low.  At the same time, officials are signaling the slowdown isn’t deep enough to warrant a return to the 700B-yuan level of railway-construction funds in 2010.  China’s State Council, or Cabinet, reiterated that downward pressure on the economy is intensifying.  The railways ministry will sell 22B yuan in 10-year bonds & 5B yuan in 15-year bonds.

Strong sales in the US & Canada powered Chrysler to a $436M Q2 profit, a big turnaround from a year earlier when Chrysler lost $370M mainly because it refinanced bailout loans.  Now majority owned by Italy's Fiat, the automaker also backed an earlier forecast that it would earn $1½B this year, unthinkable 3 years ago.  It's benefiting from a reliance on North America & limited exposure to overseas markets.  Other car companies are losing money in Europe & seeing sales slowdowns in China & South America.  More than 75% of Chrysler sales come from the US & Canada accounts for another 12%.  Q2 revenue rose 23% to $16.8B.  US sales rose 30% in Q2 while its share of the market went from 10.1% last year to 11.5%.  In Canada, sales rose 7% in H1 to just over 130K vehicles.

Chrysler Reports $436 Million Second-Quarter Profit

Loews net income plunged 78% in Q2 as the holding company took a large charge because it lowered the value of its natural gas & oil properties due to declining prices.  The company reported EPS of 14¢ compared with 61¢ last year.  Removing the impairment charge of $142M at its energy properties, earnings were $198M versus $250M last year.  Revenue slipped 4% to $3.39B from $3.54 B.  Earnings at Diamond Offshore (DO) fell because fewer rigs were used as more of them underwent special surveys. The division also dealt with higher contract drilling expenses.  The performance was somewhat offset by the sale of 5 rigs.  Boardwalk Pipeline (BWP), a major MLP, earnings rose mostly because of the 2011 acquisition of Boardwalk HP Storage.  The stock sold off $2.15 (5%).

Overbought markets need time to reassess the move up.  There are 2 big financial meetings this week, first the FMOC then the ECB will decide what bold moves to take on Thurs.  The Federal Reserve is not expected to do much beyond a few words of encouragement for the euro guys.  In this "we make it up as we go along world," nobody knows what will be decided in Europe.  But Dow is hanging in above 13K which is becoming an important support level.

Lower markets on increased European debt worries

Dow sank 276 (finishing at its lows), decliners ahead of advancers 4-1 & NAZ fell 52.  Banks led the markets lower with the Financial Index falling 7+ to the 181s.  However it still had gain of 30 in Oct.

The MLP & REIT indices fell 1+, but each had an outstanding month.  Junk bond funds slipped fractionally & also had an excellent month while Treasuries rallied today with falling stock prices.  Oil dropped as the dollar climbed & equities fell, trimming the biggest monthly gain in more than 2 years.  Gold fell today & ended with a rather drab month, hanging in above $1700.

European govs are running into initial resistance as they seek to use this week’s Group of 20 summit to turn early praise for their revamped crisis- fighting strategy into financial support.  Talk & action are different.  The G-20 leaders convene Nov 3, a week after euro-area authorities pledged to magnify the capacity of their rescue fund to €1T ($1.4T) & look beyond their borders for help in doing to combat the debt turmoil posing the biggest threat to global growth.  While the help of China & cooperation of the IMF were immediately sought, pledges of hard cash are proving hard to come by.  In an indication Europe may eventually prevail, Brazilian & Russian officials said their govs may be willing to provide assistance.  The talks will cast the G-20 into another round of crisis resolution 3 years after its leaders first gathered to address fallout from the failure of Lehman Brothers.  In a bid to revive that collective spirit, European Commission President Barroso & European Council President Van Rompuy wrote to G-20 govs to stress “a continued need for joint action by all G-20 partners in a spirit of common responsibility and common purpose.”  They will work on results which may be a long way off.

Thai ‘Credibility’ at Stake as Factories Soak in Flood Plain

Photo:   Bloomberg

Thousands of Thai companies with factories have been swamped by record floods.  They are calling on the gov to help ensure it never happens again as waters slowly recede north of Bangkok.  More than 9B cubic meters of water released this month from dams filled to capacity have swept down a river basin the size of Florida, inundating 7 industrial parks that helped transform Thailand from an agriculture-based economy to a manufacturing hub since the first one was built 4 decades ago.  The worst floods since 1942 have shuttered 10K factories, put 660K jobs at risk & caused damage of 140B baht ($4.6B), according to gov figures.  Factory owners are concerned the disaster may repeat itself as water defenses fail to keep pace with the development of roads, housing estates & business complexes in Bangkok & its vicinity, which accounts for about half of Thailand's industrial output.  Flooding affects electronics parts (such as disk drives) used in computers & auto parts, especially for major Japanese companies.  The flooding is not getting enough attention, but could affect many companies around the world.

Loews Q3 net income more than quadrupled, but the results missed expectations as investment income fell & catastrophe losses increased.  Loews, CNA Financial (CNA) & Diamond Offshore Drilling (DO), EPS was 40¢, ahead of 9¢ last year but below 66¢ forecast.  Adjusted to exclude one-time items in both periods, net income was higher in Q3 last year than this year.  The decline was attributed to lower investment income & bigger natural catastrophe losses at CNA.  Revenue fell 7% to $3.44B.  Insurance premium revenue rose 5% to $1.7B from $1.65B.  Net investment income dropped 49% to $333M from $654M & investment losses were  $27M compared with a $62M in investment gains last year.  The stock fell 1.58 (4%).

Even with today's decline, Dow managed a 10% gain, or 1.1K, in Oct, hardly chump change.  This qualifies as one of its best months ever.  But selling at the close is not what the bulls want to see.  In addition, adjustments by fund managers to square their books at the end of the month, make it difficult to understand what really happened in the markets.  Confidence is high on European leaders using magic to fix the European debt mess.  This week, the G-20 meeting will show how much resolve lies behind their words.  The VIX, volatility index, shot up 4+ to almost 29, remaining elevated going into the new month.   Nervousness is riding high after an excellent month for the markets.

Homeowners in the foreclosure process were an average of 507 days late on payments at the end of last year as lenders handled a record rate of mortgage delinquencies, according to Lender Processing Services.  The average grew 25% from 406 days at the end of 2009.  The high jobless rate is increasing loan defaults & weighing down prices as foreclosed properties sell at a discount.  Homeowners with 6.87M loans, 13% of all mortgages, were at least 30 days behind on payments as of Dec 31.  The number of homes receiving a foreclosure filings may climb 20% this year as banks step up the pace of seizure. A record 2.87 million properties received notices of default, auction or repossession last year, according to RealtyTrac.  Dreary housing numbers are hard on the economic recovery & making it difficult for the high unemployment rate to be reduced.

Stocks returned to their winning ways (Dow has a 6 day winning streak).  The report on Fri that Asian money is investing in US stocks, a new safe haven investment, could explain this rise.  Gold & Treasuries are not getting much attention even though intl worries are at high levels.  MLPs have been flattening out in recent days, maybe from competition of higher yields on Treasuries.  The 3 Treasury auctions this week will be lower than the $100B acutions last year, but their success is uncertain.
