Markets fall on worries over refinancing Greek bonds

Dow began the day lower & remains near its lows at minus 148, decliners over advancers 10-1 & NAZ fell 39.  Banks stocks led the selling, with the Financial Index dropping 4 to 195.

The MLP index dropped a very big 5+ to the 401s & the REIT index fell 2+ to the 244s.  A chart for an MLP tracking fund shows recent selling in MLPs.  Junk bond funds were lower & Treasuries rose on a flight too safety by investors.  Oil dropped as the EU offered to restart negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program & as the European economy contracted in Q4.  This dreary news brought selling to gold.

Euro-Region Economy Contracts as Investment, Exports Decline

Photo:   Bloomberg

Europe's economies contracted in Q4 as investment declined by the most since 2009.  Exports & consumer spending declined.  The GDP shrank 0.3% from Q3 according to the EU statistics office, confirming an estimate published last moth.  Exports fell 0.4% after a 1.4% gain in Q3, while household spending declined 0.4% & investment dropped 0.7%.  While Europe is facing its 2nd recession in less than 3 years, the economy shows “tentative signs of stabilization,” according to the ECB.  ECB efforts to pump cash into the economy have helped ease concern about a credit crunch & won govs time to agree on measures to contain the debt crisis.  The ECB lent 800 banks €529B ($698B) for 3 years last week in the biggest single refinancing operation in its history, taking total long-term lending above €1T.  Finance ministers also authorized bailout II to raise money for Greece’s bond exchange, the first step in releasing funds from a €130B  rescue package.  ECB policy makers said they expect the loans will be channeled to households & companies, helping to boost the real economy.  That assumes banks lend this money rather than sit tight.  Brazil, one of the 4 countries in BRIC, said its economy grew just 2.7% last year, the worst performance since 2003..

Private Investors Holding About 20% of Greek Debt

Photo:   Bloomberg

About 20% of private investors have agreed to the bond swap required for an intl bailout of Greece.  The creditors’ steering committee that said yesterday they would join in the exchange with a face value of €40B ($53B), compared with the €206B of Greek bonds in private hands.  European officials are pressing investors to swallow the writedowns to avert even greater losses.  The goal, which runs through Thurs, is to reduce 53.5% of privately held Greek debt, helping avert an uncontrolled default.  Only one steering-committee member, Landesbank Baden- Wuerttemberg, has still to back the offer.  Germany’s DSW investor protection group separately advised private-sector bondholders to reject the offer.  A completion of the bond exchange is crucial to Europe’s efforts to turn the page on the Greek sovereign debt saga.  The 2nd rescue package depends on the swap’s outcome.

Merck, a Dow stock, expects Q1 EPS to be 95-98¢, excluding items, below the average estimate of $1.01.  Including items, EPS should be 52-60¢.  With the € exchange rate at $1.31, currency is expected to have a 1-2% unfavorable impact on sales in Q1.  MRK reiterated its full-year forecast, calling for EPS of $3.75-$3.85, excluding restructuring & acquisition-related costs, & $2.04-$2.30 including those items.  Revenue should be near 2011 levels on a constant currency basis, but at current exchange rates, sales would be reduced 2-3%.  The stock was off 34¢.

A shorter term graph below highlights the sideways trading for the Dow as it tried to get over 13K.  Gloomy thoughts coming from Europe & about getting the Greek debt mess straightened out are too much for stocks to deal with.  Yesterday, China cut its growth forecast, not helpful to this market.  Until the Greek bond refinancing package is approved on Thurs, sellers should be in charge.

Markets edge higher ahead of the jobs report

Dow was up 3, advancers ahead of decliners 2-1 & NAZ gained 15.  The Financial Index rose 1½ to 194, a new high since late Jul.

New claims for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week.  Claims dropped 12K to 367K according to the Labor Dept as job growth has gained momentum in recent months.  Expectations were for claims to fall to 375K.  They have been below 400K for 8 of the last 10 weeks, holding under a level associated with labor market healing.  The 4 week moving average fell 2K to 375K.  The number still receiving benefits under regular state programs fell 130K to 3.4M, the lowest since Sep 2008 (Lehman collapse) & the number on emergency unemployment benefits rose 100K to 3M.  A total of 7.7M were claiming unemployment benefits, little changed from the prior week.

ECB May Hold Out on Greek Debt Swap Until Investor Deal

Photo:   Bloomberg

The ECB is likely to refuse to show its hand on how it will help cut Greece’s debt burden until investors & the gov have agreed to a deal.  While Greece’s creditors are increasing pressure on the ECB to join the talks, central bankers have remained silent.  The ECB wants to see the private-sector agreement concluded before indicating its strategy, which may include forgoing profits from its Greek bonds or a transfer to one of the region’s rescue funds.  At a summit this week, ECB President Draghi rejected the idea of transferring back profits from bond holdings to the Greek gov.  The ECB has purchased €219B of debt-strapped nations’ bonds since 2010.  It is believed between €36-55B are invested in Greek sovereign debt.  When the ECB started buying bonds, Greek 10-year bonds traded at 84¢ on the €.  Since then, prices have dropped to 23¢ on investor concerns that the country is close to default.  The ECB is “not party” to ongoing discussions between the Greek gov & the private sector, Draghi said (whatever that means).  Wheels keep spinning.while the clock is ticking.

Merck Profit Beats Analyst Estimates

Photo:  Bloomberg

Merck, a Dow stock swung to a Q4 profit because of lower acquisition & restructuring charges along with slightly higher sales.  The company forecast little improvement this year, when its top-selling drug, Singulair, loses patent protection.  MRK said there is also increased pressure for lower drug prices in some key emerging markets as well as Europe & a shift to unfavorable exchange rates that will hurt revenue.  Q4 EPS was 49¢ versus a loss of 17¢ in the prior year.  Adjusted EPS of 97¢ beat the prior year's 88¢ & topped expectations for 95¢.  Revenue rose 1.6% $12.3B, short of expectations for $12.5B.  "We had a good quarter and a strong overall year," CEO Frazier said. "We are committed to strong operational growth despite challenges such as the Singulair patent expiration."  He said MRK has some newly approved drugs launching in various countries, got approval in Q4 to market 2 drugs to additional patient groups & plans during 2012-2013 to apply for approval of 5 major products.  The company forecast 2012 EPS of $3.75-$3.85, excluding charges.  Analysts expect $3.83.  Including charges, MRK expects EPS of $2.04-$2.30.  The company said it expects revenue at or near 2011's total, just $48B.  The stock fell 58¢.

Markets are back to stumbling around ahead of the big jobs report tomorrow.  Earnings continue to get a mixed reception, Greece is still trying to come up with bailout II & Congress has not approved the tax cuts which everybody agrees are needed.  The MLP index is doing quite well, just below its recent record highs above 400.  Buying in MLPs is helped by the publicity of more investment in shale oil & natural gas along with their relatively low yields (pretty much the most attractive today).  Dow is holding near its highs made last week.

Jobless Claims in U.S. Decreased to Lowest Level

Photo:   Bloomberg

Claims for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest in 7 months.  The Labor Dept said initial claims fell for the 2nd straight week, down 10K to 390K.  But the labor market is still a long way from recovering from the deep 2007-2009 recession.  Weekly jobless claims still remain well above pre-recession levels & have dipped below 400K, a threshold believed to signify improving labor market conditions, only 10 times over the past year.  The 4-week moving average fell to 400K, the lowest since Apr, from 405K in the previous week.  The number continuing to receive benefits fell 92K to 3.62M.  Those who’ve used up their traditional benefits & are now collecting emergency & extended payments increased 43K to 3.53M in the latest week.  Slightly better news does not bring rejoicing.

Jobless Claims Fall to Lowest in Seven Months

More US homes entered foreclosure in Oct than in the previous month, with Florida, Pennsylvania & Indiana registering among the largest monthly increases. 77K properties received an initial default notice last month, up 10% from Sep.  The number of homes scheduled to be auctioned or repossessed by lenders also posted monthly increases.  All told, notices of default, scheduled auctions & bank repossessions, warnings that can eventually lead to a home being lost to foreclosure, hit a 7-month high in Oct.  Activity slowed a year ago after problems surfaced with the way many lenders were handling documentation, namely shoddy mortgage paperwork comprising several shortcuts.  Many of the largest banks reacted by temporarily ceasing all foreclosures, re-filing previously filed foreclosure cases & revisiting pending cases to prevent errors.  Banks appear to be moving past those problems now & starting to tackle a swelling backlog of homes with mortgages that have gone unpaid   The rate that homeowners were 60 or more days late on their mortgage payment rose in the Jun-Sep period for the first time since the last 3 months of 2009, 5.88% of homeowners missed 2 or more payments (an early sign of possible foreclosure), up from 5.82% in Q2.  In addition, 22.5% of homes had a mortgage that was under water (10.9M properties) & another 2.4M borrowers had less than 5% equity in their home.  More bad news for an industry that is already in a depression.

Merck, a Dow stock, is starting a new 4-pronged srategy to grow & reward shareholders. Along with expanding medicine sales in emerging markets & other areas, it plans to expand its consumer & animal health businesses, launch new drugs & boost sales of existing ones, as well as well as manage spending tightly.  The quarterly div was boosted 4¢ to 42¢.  CEO Kenneth Frazier said the company hopes to keep 2012 revenue about the same as this year's, even though its top selling drug Singulair gets generic competition next Aug.  The company plans to file for approval of 8 drugs with the FDA in 2012 & 2013. The stock gained 87¢ (2½%).

There is a little sense of calm coming from Europe, but not sure how low that will last. Greece got a new prime minister, but the gov is having trouble finding people to run the country with more austerity measures coming.  Italy has a fuzzy economic outlook.  Because of all the arguments it's generating, the super committee is getting more attention.  Economic data in the US remains soggy.  A Bloomberg measure of confidence holds at record lows.  The housing market continues dreary & that has a very big impact on high unemployment.  Today's rally is not impressive & the 10.6K floor for the Dow may not hold for long.

Merck Q3 profit soared from results a year ago that were weighed down by huge acquisition & legal charges & beat estimates.  "Three consecutive quarters of top and bottom line growth demonstrate out ability to consistently perform while at the same time making the strategic investments necessary for the future," CEO Kenneth Frazier said.  EPS rose to 55¢, up from a depressed 11¢ last year.  Excluding acquisition & restructuring charges in Q3, adjusted EPS  was 94¢, 3¢ higher than the 91¢ expected.  Revenue rose 8% to $12.02B from $11.1B, below expectations of $11.6B.  Revenue was boosted about 5% by favorable currency exchange rates.  The company raised the lower end of its 2011 forecast, to a new range of $3.72-$3.76 ($2.03-$2.20 excluding one-time items).  Analysts are expecting $3.73.  Prescription drug sales totaled $10.35B, led by strong sales of Singulair, Januvia & combination diabetes drug Janumet, the HIV drug Isentress & the Gardasil & Zostavax vaccines.  Singulair, it's top drug, saw sales rise 10% to $1.34B but US patent expires next Aug.  The stock was up 64¢.
