Walgreen's, a Dividend Aristocrat, profits fell more than 4% due in part to a slow flu season & its split with the Express Scripts pharmacy network.  A 3-year contract between the companies ends next week.  WAG has received $5.3B in revenue from Express Scripts, but said it would rather give that up than continue filling unprofitable prescriptions.  Unless the companies strike a last-minute deal, most people whose prescription drug benefits are handled by Express Scripts won't be able to fill their prescriptions at WAG stores, starting next month.  WAG is the biggest drugstore chain in the US with 7800 locations.  EPS inched up to 63¢ from 62¢  last year when it had more shares outstanding.  Revenue grew 4.7% to $18.2B.  Analysts expected EPS of 67¢ on $18.24B in revenue.  Earlier this month, WAG said sales at stores open at least a year grew 2.5% during the qtr.  However the Express Scripts fight reduced those sales by 1.1%.  The stock lost 13¢.

KB Home Q4 net income fell 20% on rising expenses, but revenue climbed on more home deliveries & a higher average selling price.  EPS was 18¢ in fiscal Q4 which compares with 23¢ last year & beat estimates of 4¢.  This was the company's first net profit in 2011.  Quarterly selling, general & administrative expenses climbed 36% to $75.6M.  Revenue rose 6% to $479.9M from $451M, topping estimates of $467.9M.  Home deliveries increased 4% & average selling price rose 3% to $238K (compared with $232K last year).  "We anticipate that our companywide average selling price will continue to grow in 2012 as we heighten our concentration in our most desirable markets, particularly in our West Coast region which typically generates higher profits,"  CEO Jeffrey Mezger said.  Q4 net orders rose 38% to 1494 from 1085.  Backlog also increased, to the highest year-end level since 2008, with a total of 2156 homes as of Nov 30 (far above a backlog of 1336 last year).  Cancellation rate as a percentage of gross orders was 34%, down from 37% last year.  For the full year, KBH had EPS of $2.32, compared with a loss of 90¢ in the previous year.  Annual revenue slipped 17% to $1.3B from $1.6B as the number of homes delivered fell 21%.  The stock dropped 52¢.

Research In Motion sales in the US fell for a 5th straight qtr in Q3 even as the BlackBerry maker's overall revenue jumped $1B from a year earlier.  Sales of RIM's BlackBerry smartphones & the PlayBook tablet in the US has struggled to keep up with Apple's (AAPL) iPhone & iPad as well as Android-based devices.  RIMM said it had US revenue of $1.03B in Q3, a 7% drop from the previous qtr.  It had US sales of $1.88B in the prior year.  The Canadian company, however, expanded elsewhere, with sales outside the US, Canada & Britain increasing 31% to $3.17B & made up 61% of total sales, up 5.4 percentage points from the year-before period.  Today the shares shot up more than 10% on buyout hopes, but those losses were pared after analysts said a buyout is unlikely as company executives focus on guiding their own turnaround.  The stock finished up $1.26 to $13.78 (10%).

Tech stocks did not take disappointing earnings well, but the rest of the market held up OK.  News from Europe has quieted down, many are away on holiday.  The US congress is  in limbo with the fate of tax & unemployment extensions hanging on for dear life.  Dow held on, near the 12.2K interim high.  Maybe tomorrow it will decide what to do but I don't think so.

The inability to raise debt ceiling unnerves investors

Stocks were under water all day & finished near the lows.  Dow fell 88, decliners over advancers more than 3-1 & NAZ dropped 16 despite another good day for its largest component, Apple.  Weakness in bank stocks led the selling, as they have a lot riding on the probable default of Greek debts & the uncertain future for US Treasuries.

Lower stock markets took down MLPs & REITs, although MLPs have been flattish since May & the REIT index just reached a new 2011 high.  Junk bond funds were soft & Treasuries lost ground in the PM, bringing the yield on the 10 year Treasury back to 3%.  Oil retreated but remains near $100.  Gold was strong, as expected, but did not surge on the uncertainties about US debt ceiling.

India Panel Said to Advise Easing Limits on Wal-Mart

WalMart, a Dividend Aristocrat, & Carrefour may gain access to the retail market of India with the world’s 2nd most-populous country after a gov panel was said to have recommended easing restrictions on the industry.  Overseas companies could be allowed to own as much as 51% of stores that sell more than one brand if they invest a minimum of $100M. India currently allows overseas companies 51% ownership in retail shops selling only one brand & 100% in wholesale stores.  The world’s 2 biggest retailers Wal-Mart & Carrefour, which already operate wholesale outlets in India, seek to sell in a market that could be worth $396B this year & may double to $785B in 2015.  WMT is expected to open hundreds of retail shops in the country if the rules are changed but the stock fell 55¢.

Apple briefly touched $400 mark for the first time, nearly a week after the company reported record earnings & revenue on the popularity of its iPhone & iPad.  This comes after competitor Research in Motion (RIMM) announced it would cut 2K jobs & reshuffle executives to fix its struggling smartphone business.  Last week AAPL said its fiscal Q3 EPS more than doubled to $7.79 as revenue climbed 82% to $28.6B.  Results were bolstered by stronger sales of iPhones & iPads (20.3M iPhones & 9.25M iPads). APPL ended with a $5+ gain to the 398s while RIMM slipped another $1.24 to the 26s.

RPM, a Dividend Aristocrat, which makes Rust-Oleum & other industrial coatings, said fiscal Q4 profit rose 15% from higher global demand for its industrial products.  EPS in its Q4 was 54¢, up from a pro forma 47¢ last year.  Revenue rose 11% to $981M.  Analysts expected EPS of 53¢ on $994M in revenue.  The pro forma year-ago figures assume that the deconsolidation of RPM's Specialty Products Holding business occurred before fiscal 2010.  For the full fiscal year 2011, EPS was $1.45 versus pro forma $1.26 per share last year as revenue rose 8.5% to $3.38B.  RPM expects industrial sales to continue to improve & projected growth in the "upper single-digit to low double-digit levels" for the segment, but said growth rates at its consumer segment would be more modest.  As a result, RPM expects EPS for FY 2012 to rise 10-15% & sales to grow 8-10%.  The guidance implies EPS of $1.60-$1.67 on $3.65-$3.72.  The stock was up 43¢.

The goings on in DC will be center stage all week.  The earliest vote on anything will be Wed & who knows what that will decide (if anything)?  Chances are final word about the status of US debts won't be known until this weekend at the earliest.  There are 2 huge problems out there.  The first is default.  Since all Congress has to do is pass any kind of bill, chances are that will be averted one way or the other.  But how they do that could affect the 2nd issue which is a credit downgrade involving many issues that are not clear.  If there is a downgrade, it will be based the politicos getting an unsatisfactory grade in dealing with the enormous deficits responsible for having to increase the debt ceiling.  So far, stock markets have been hardly disturbed by these problems.

Markets drift after hitting 2 year highs

Dow fell 31, advancers over decliners 4-3 & NAZ is up 5.  Popular averages are essentially at 2 year highs, but there is no conviction to take them higher.  Bank stocks as market leaders also edged a little higher.

Congress passed the $858B bill, by a 277-148 vote, extending all Bush-era tax cuts for 2 years.  The tax-cut plan extends through 2012 all Bush-era tax reductions on income, capital gains & dividends. It also continues expanded unemployment insurance benefits through 2011, cuts payroll taxes by 2 percentage points during 2011 & lets businesses write off 100% of capital investments between Sep 2010 & the end of  2011.  The legislation also extends dozens of expired & expiring tax breaks, including a research & development tax credit & a college tuition tax credit that was created in last year’s economic stimulus law.  As the renewed tax cuts will expire at the end of 2012 they are certain to be a focus of the next presidential campaign.  However, the so called omnibus bill, a huge package which was hastily written containing a ton of pork projects among of things, to fund the gov for FY2011, was thrown out last night.  The gov will will have to figure out how to pay bills until the Reps report to work in Jan.

RIM Climbs After Predicting Profit Topping Analyst Estimates

Photo:  Bloomberg

Research In Motion (RIMM) growing reliance on sales outside the United States creates questions about the BlackBerry maker's competitive edge, even after the company reported decent quarterly results.  The Canadian company said that net profit jumped 45% & it shipped 14.2M devices in the 3 months ending Nov 27.  But its relative weakness in the US, the most saturated & valuable smartphone market, & its rising inventory levels, which RIM said was due to a burst of orders ahead of the Christmas shopping season, were causes of concern that momentum is fading.  Analysts have mixed views about the future of RIMM.  The stock was up 1½ after failing to participate in this year's stock market rally

The vote by the House on the tax bill should have given the markets a big lift.  Extending the low tax rates did not help, maybe because this legislation only runs for 24 months.  After all is said & done, markets are having a good year.  The Dow is up 1K YTD, an impressive gain especially when the economy is not having a robust recovery.  In the absence of major news developments, markets can be expected to drift along in the PM.

Oil is little changed despite the cold weather in the northeast. For its bulls, 70 is holding as a floor as it tries to get back to 75. The dollar is strong again accounting for weakness in gold which has dropped over 100 in 3 weeks, shown in the chart for GLD. Its long term prospects remain excellent, especially with massive spending by the US gov, but over the short term there are obstacles in its way.
