More expensive gas drove up consumer prices in Aug by the most in 3 years.  But outside energy, inflation was tame.  The Labor Dept said that consumer prices rose 0.6% last month, the first increase since Mar & higher gas prices accounted for 80% of the increase.  Food prices rose 0.2%.  Excluding the volatile food & energy categories, core prices edged up 0.1% for the 2nd straight month.  Rents, medical care & new cars got more expensive, while clothing, furniture & airline fares fell in price.  Lower inflation will allow the Federal Reserve (FED) to stick with programs announced aimed at lifting the economy.  In the past 12 months, prices have increased 1.7%, down from a peak of 3.9% in Sep% 2011 & below the FED inflation target of 2%.  Core consumer prices rose 1.9% in the past 12 months, the smallest annual increase in a year.  Aug prices rose largely because gas prices have jumped in recent weeks.  The average price for a gallon of gas nationwide was $3.87, up 16¢ in the past month.  The modest increase in food prices indicates the drought in the Midwest is not yet pushing up grocery prices.  That should happen in the comings months.

US industrial production fell in Aug by the largest amount in more than 3 years as factories produced fewer cars & other manufactured goods & Hurricane Isaac triggered shutdowns along the Gulf Coast.  Industrial production dropped 1.2% compared to Jul, according to the FED, the biggest setback since a 1.7% decline in Mar 2009 when the country was in recession.  Manufacturing output, the most important component, fell 0.7%, led by a 4% drop in output at auto plants.  Manufacturing helped lift the country out of the recession, but it slowed in the spring as consumers cut back on spending, businesses invested less in machinery & demand for US exports was hurt by a global weakness.  US factory activity shrank for a 3rd straight month in Aug, according to the Institute for Supply Management's survey of manufacturing conditions.  Growth slowed in Q2 to an annual rate of just 1.7%, down from 2% in Q1 & 4.1% in Q4 2011.  Weakness in manufacturing was widespread.  Production fell at factories making machinery, computers, airplanes & furniture.  Even with the Aug decline, output at manufacturing plants is still 20.7% above the recession low in Jun 2009.

European govs put off decisions on aid for Spain & a loosening of Greece's loan terms, counting on the ECB's bond-buying pledges to provide interim relief from market turmoil.  Finance ministers meeting in Cyprus looked to a fresh set of reforms to rebuild confidence in Spain’s economic management & said the fate of Greece’s €240B ($314B) rescue program won’t be decided until late Oct, possibly at a crisis summit of leaders.  The central bank, which helped drive the € to a 4- month high, warned that it has only bought time for govs to deliver the deficit-cutting & growth-boosting steps needed to stabilize the economy.  “The amount of time that we have -- it’s a very difficult question to answer,” ECB President Draghi told reporters after meeting the euro-region ministers in Cyprus.  “You have to ask the markets. If we continue going this way, then one has to be very optimistic.”  The € rose to $1.31, the highest since May 4.  Spain’s extra 10-year borrowing cost over German levels narrowed by 3 basis points to 404 basis points.

Europe Bides Time on Spain as ECB Relied Upon to Soothe Markets

Stocks are flying high as if there were no worries.  Dow hasn't been this high since early 2008.  But all is not well.  For starters, nobody is sure what good the mortgage program will do to help reduce high unemployment.  Mortgage rates are already at record lows.  The fiscal cliff keeps getting nearer & buying more mortgages will not cure that.  Europe still has enormous financial problems & China is growing an an unsatisfactory rate.  In addition, rising gas prices at the pump need to get more attention.  But I have to admit, high stock prices feel good when I like at mine.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti

Photo:   Bloomberg

The Italian gov easily won a confidence vote on its package of austerity measures in the lower chamber of Parliament as more protest strikes hit the country.  Premier Monti called the vote to speed passage of the €30B ($39B) in extra taxes & pension reforms that he says are vital to save Italy from financial disaster.  About €10 B of those savings would be reinvested into growth.  The Senate is expected to vote on the measures in the next few days to complete approval.   As lawmakers voted, a one-day nationwide transportation strike caused chaos for commuters. Unions are incensed over pension reforms making Italians work more years & until an older age before being eligible for generous pension checks.  The gov softened the reforms slightly.  The wide majority of votes in favor of the package was expected, but that doesn't mean the main political parties are happy with all of it.

Consumer prices were flat in Nov as Americans paid less for cars & gas, a further sign of a cooldown in inflation.  The Labor Dept said the CPI was unchanged last month.  Prices rose 3.4% in the 12 months through Nov, off from the 3-year high of 3.9% clocked in Sep.  However, some of the data could give pause to policymakers still concerned about inflation.  Outside food & energy, prices climbed 0.2% & is up 2.2% in the 12 months.  But dragging down the overall index, gas fell 2.4% & prices for new vehicles were down 0.3%.  Prices for food rose 0.1% in Nov.  Within the core index, prices for apparel jumped 0.6%.  There are expectations that inflation slowing over the coming months, which could help prompt the Federal Reserve to do more to bring down the country's unemployment rate.

Online game maker Zynga prices IPO at $10 a share

Photo:   Yahoo

Zynga raised $1B in its IPO, pricing the shares at the top of the market range. The developer of games such as “CityVille,” “FarmVille” & “Mafia Wars” sold 100M shares for $10 each after the company had offered the stock for $8.50-$10.  This is the biggest offering by a US internet company since Google (GOOG) raised $1.9B in 2004.  Its increasing ubiquity & expansion prospects appeal to investors.  Founded in 2007, ZNGA doubled sales to $829M in the first 9 months of 2011.  The IPO values ZNGA at $7B, or 6.8X revenue in the year through Sep 30, more than triple its rival Electronic Arts (ERTS). The stock has not begun trading yet. but probably will jump to a significant premium.

Zynga Raises $1 Billion in Pricing for Largest Technology IPO Since Google

An oversold market is higher with a lack of negative news from Europe & the IPO by ZNGA.  But zest is lacking from these gains.  Dow is still down 250 this week.  Markets are drifting in this semi holiday period, with bias is to the downside.  Trading should be light in the PM, while markets continue to drift.  Next week news from Europe will be the major market driver & it will be more of the same.

Stocks had another ugly day from dreary news on many fronts.  Dow sank 419 finishing near the lows, decliners over advancers 10-1 & NAZ down 131 had a bigger percentage drop.  Bank stocks led the way lower, although all groups sold off with techs especially hard hit on worries about another recession.

The MLP index & REIT index each plunged 10+ & the MLP Index closed in the 344s, solidly below the important 350 resistance level.  Junk bond funds fell on the order of 2-3% but Treasuries were in demand as a safe haven investment.  The yield on the 10 year Treausury has returned to 2.1%, the rate investors accepted at last week's auction.  Oil declined the most in more than a week as commodities fell around the world after forecasts for global economic expansion were cut.  Gold hit its latest record high, nearly $1830 as investors spooked by the prospect of a return to recession sought out safety.

Consumer Prices in U.S. Probably Stabilized

Photo:   Bloomberg

More expensive gas, food, clothes & other necessities are squeezing consumers who are already struggling with stagnant pay & worried about a weak economy.  The Consumer Price Index rose 0.5% in Jul according to, the Labor Dept, following a 0.2% drop in Jun, largely because of an increase in gas prices.  The core index, which excludes volatile food & energy costs, rose 0.2%, below the 0.3% rise in each of the previous 2 months.  Over the past 12 months, prices have risen 3.6%, equal to the 12-month increase in May & June.  Core prices over the past 12 months have gone up 1.8%, the largest increase since Dec 2009.

Existing Home Sales in U.S. Unexpectedly Decreased in July

Photo:  Bloomberg

Sales of previously owned homes in the US unexpectedly dropped in Jul, reflecting an increase in contract cancellations due to strict lending rules & low appraisals.  Purchases decreased 3.5% to a 4.67M annual rate, the weakest since Nov, according to the National Association of Realtors & economists had forecasted an increase. The median price dropped 4.4% from last year & 16% of real estate agents polled said they had at least one pending contract canceled last month.  Housing remains stuck in the mud!

Hewlett-Packard, a Dow stock & the world’s largest computer maker, is in talks to buy Autonomy for about $10B & plans to spin off its personal-computer business.  Autonomy confirmed the  talks with HPQ & may receive a premium of more than 60% in an all-cash offer.  Autonomy, the UKs 2nd-largest software maker, offers programs used in database search with customers that include Coca-Cola (KO), Nestle (NESN) & the Securities & Exchange Commission.  HPQ fell 1.88 (6%) with an ugly chart over the last 6 months.

While volume is not running as high as last week, volatility had a sharp rise. The VIX, volatility index, shot up 11 to the 42s indicating there are a lot of nervous traders.  In prior months it had been lumbering along in the teens & spiked to a high of about 29 in May.  Today it started at 36.

The world is coming apart once again (Chicken Little is getting more phone calls).  Europe's banks are beginning to suffer the contagion of Europe's sovereign debt crisis ripped European markets.  Weak US economic reports made matters worse.  DC is closed, sort of good & bad.  There is less interference but the large numbers who are unemployed & underemployed are suffering while politicos are on holiday.  The Pres is starting a holiday that many could not afford.  Dow is back below 11K, down 300 this week & almost 1.2K in Aug.  The lowest closing for the Dow last week was 10.7K, which can become an important support level & may be tested soon.  There are 2 weeks left in Aug & dark days may not be over.   Sorry I missed the AM posting, but I was called away.
