Higher markets on hopes for stimulus by the Federal Reserve

Dow lost its early strength but still ended with a gain of 90, advancers over decliners 5-2 & NAZ was up 18.  The Financial Index rose 1 to 203, pulling back from earlier highs.  The MLP index was up 2+ to the 396s, a 4 month high, & the REIT index was up a fraction in the 266s.  Junk bond funds were higher & Treasuries rose, pushing 10-year yields to a 3-week low, as Ben Bernanke said he wouldn’t rule out a 3rd round of bond buying under quantitative easing to spur growth & lower unemployment.  Oil gained again, taking it closer to $100 & gold was strong after hints by the Federal Reserve about more stimulus spending.

Consumer Sentiment in U.S. Reaches Highest Level in Three Months

Photo:   Bloomberg

Consumer confidence improved more than projected in Aug as merchant discounts & record-low interest rates help US households bolster finances.  The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan final sentiment index climbed to 74.3, a 3-month high, from 72.3 in Jul.  However the gauge averaged 89 in the 5 years leading up to the recession.  Other reports indicated manufacturing is cooling.  Incentives by companies such as General Motors (GM) are boosting sales, just as Federal Reserve efforts to lower borrowing costs are allowing Americans to reduce debt, which may underpin consumer spending.  Nonetheless, Big Ben said additional action to spur growth remains an option because unemployment is a “grave concern.”  Concern with elevated joblessness is global. Euro-area unemployment rose to a record 11.3% in Jul, the same as in Jun after that month’s figure was revised higher.  In Japan, consumer prices slid at a faster pace in Jul & industrial production unexpectedly slumped, raising the danger that the world’s 3rd-largest economy has slipped back into a recession.  The consumer sentiment gauge was projected to rise to 73.6.  The index averaged 64.2 during the 18-month recession that ended in Jun 2009.  The Michigan survey’s index of current conditions rose to 88.7, a 4-year high, from 82.7 in the prior month.  The share of households with incomes of less than $75K that said it was a good time to buy durable goods was the highest in 5 years.  This optimism contrasts with the Conference Board’s index which decreased to 60.6 in Aug, the lowest level since Nov from a revised 65.4 in the prior month.  Go figgah!

Orders to U.S. companies rose in July, reflecting a surge in demand for autos and commercial aircraft. Orders to US companies rose in Jul, reflecting a surge in demand for autos & commercial aircraft.  But a key orders category that tracks business investment plans fell by the largest amount in 8 months.  Factory orders rose 2.8% in Jul, the biggest overall advance in a year, reflecting sizable gains in demand for motor vehicles & airplanes, according to the Commerce Dept.  Core capital goods orders, viewed as a good proxy for investment spending, plunged 4%, the 4th setback in the past 5 months.  The worry is that businesses have begun to scale back their plans to expand & modernize in the face of spreading economic weakness in Europe & such major export markets as China, Brazil & India.  There are also worries that companies are already postponing plans to buy new equipment & hire new workers because of the uncertainty over how the federal budget deadlock will be resolved, a development that would represent another blow for an already weak recovery.  For Jul, orders for durable goods, items from battleships to bicycles, increased 4.1%, slightly lower than the gov preliminary estimate last week of a 4.2% gain.  Orders for non-durable goods, items such as food, clothing & paper, increased 1.5 % following a 2.3% decline in Jun.  The strength in durable goods was led by a 53.9% surge in the volatile category of commercial aircraft while demand for motor vehicles climbed a strong 20.6%.  Orders are an important leading indicator.

Stocks settled back in the PM, but still had a fairly good day.  Volume was drab, as expected.  It's difficult to make much from these swings.  The thinking is that Big Ben is all for more stimulus, but it's not clear what form it would take, & there is a feeling that others on the board are more cautious.  They raise concerns that its not clear what good the former moves did with unemployment still at unacceptable levels & an economy that has not truly recovered from the recession 3 years ago.  Dow ended gaining 82 in Aug & always stayed close to the 13K level.  Sep is the month which has delivered the worst stock market performance in the past, even though Oct has the memorable days.

Dow fell 68, decliners over advancers 5-4 & NAZ was off 8.  Even Apple (AAPL) fell, down 9 from its record high.  The Financial Index gave up early gains & ended with a fractional gain in the 204s.  MLPs fell 1+ to the 394s & the REIT index was pennies lower in the 264s.  Junk bond funds rose, at or near their yearly highs, & Treasuries inched up after recent selling.  Oil continued on its winning ways & gold finally found buyers, shown in its charts below.

Retail gasoline in the US rose to a seasonal high after refinery upsets cut fuel supplies & crude traded near a 3-month high.  The national average price for gas at the pump is $3.72, up from $3.58 a year ago.  That's the highest level for this season since at least 1990 when data was first tracked.  Retail gas has climbed for 7 weeks, advancing 38.8¢ since Jul 2, as crude prices gained more than $12 a barrel & refinery disruptions sent gasoline inventories to the lowest level for this time of year since 2008.  Process units at Chevron (CVX)'s 240K barrel-a-day Richmond refinery, the largest in Northern California, were producing at 60% of capacity after an Aug 6 blaze that shut the plant's only crude unit.  This is not good news for drivers.

Barnes & Noble is working to navigate a shift to digital content, fell after posting a 2nd straight quarterly sales decline in Nook devices.  Sales in the Nook unit were little changed at $192M in fiscal Q1, hurt by a drop in demand for devices, after a 34% gain last year.  A 23% drop in average selling prices & production delays with the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight hurt sales last qtr.  Sales of digital content, including e-books & applications, rose 46% after a gain of 65% in the previous qtr.  The net loss in the qtr was 78¢, compared with a loss of 99¢ a year earlier.  Analysts projected an EPS loss of 90¢.  While revenue from what it considers its growth unit were little changed, so-called same-store sales rose 4.6%, marking a 3rd straight gain.  Excluding revenue from Nook products, sales at bookstores rose 7.6%, helped by continuing to gain customers from the liquidation of rival Borders Group last year.  Total revenue rose 2.5% to $1.45B, just under the $1.49B projection.  The company is working to boost sales in the Nook unit by expanding outside the US.  It will open a website in the UK in the next few months to sell digital books & Nook devices would soon appear in retailers there.  BKS will also look to grow overseas through a proposed partnership with Microsoft (MSFT), a Dow stock.  MSFT will invest $300M for an 18% stake in a Nook subsidiary that may be spun off into a standalone company.  It has also agreed to spend $305M over 5 years on revenue sharing & capital expenditures.  The stock lost 48¢.

Whole Foods Sees Stores Tripling With Embrace of Produce

When Whole Foods announced last year opening a store in downtown Detroit, the reaction was predictable: Whole Foods? In Detroit?  The move reflects a new direction for America’s largest purveyor of natural goods, according to CEO Walter Robb.  “We’re accelerating growth,” Robb said.  “That’s going to take us places we have not been to before.”  As WFM prepares to open the Detroit store in May, it’s planning to triple its store count to 1K & boost sales by opening locations in underserved areas & smaller markets.  Supermarkets are fighting for share as Americans eat out more & grocery-store sales stagnate. Industry revenue will grow an estimated 0.4% to $491B this year, according to IBISWorld.  Sales at WFM may rise 16% to $11.7B in fiscal 2012.  Its “niche product lines and loyal customer base” will help propel continuing sales growth, IBISWorld said.  The stock stock was up 85¢ today & is up $35 in the last year.

Stocks have had an excellent run since early Jun.  Dow gained 1200 with only minor setbacks along the way.  Even bulls need time to pause & rest.  There is nothing new going on.  Hopes are running high that the euro biggies will supply magic to cure the debt mess.  With all the meetings this week, anything can come from them.  But it's difficult to imagine a long term cure for fundamental problems with deep roots.  Dow is 200 below its yearly highs & may try again shortly for new highs.

The coalition gov in Greece suffered another setback as a 2nd Cabinet member quit in 2 days over what critics called a conflict of interest.  The departure of Giorgos Venicos was the latest in a litany of missteps & bad luck that have halted the gov's ability to regain control of its austerity program.  The new conservative-led gov was sworn in last week, ending months of political deadlock. But in the last week alone it has suffered a string of casualties.
(1) The designated finance minister resigned yesterday due to illness after being hospitalized the day he was to have been sworn in.
(2) PM Samaras himself is recovering at home from a serious eye operation & will be unable to attend a European Union leaders' summit later this week.
(3) The 2 health problems delayed a visit to Athens by intl debt inspectors, which in turn delayed their report on Greek debt for EU leaders.
(4) The latest casualty, Vernicos, did not immediately give a reason for his departure, but the main opposition Syriza party had accused him of maintaining an offshore company in what appeared to be a conflict of interest.
(5) On the positive side, prominent economist Yannis Stournaras was named as Greece's new finance minister.  He was involved in the country's negotiations to join the euro & was head of the Foundation for Economic & Industrial Research, a think tank & research body.
Does anybody know what's going on with $Bs at stake?

News Corp.’s Murdoch Said to Consider Splitting Company in Two

Photo:   Bloomberg

News Corp is considering splitting into 2 publicly traded companies. The move comes as Britain's communications regulator, Ofcom, enters the final stages of its review of whether satellite TV firm British Sky Broadcasting (39% owned by NWS) "fit and proper" to hold a broadcast license.  The separation of its tainted newspaper division from the lucrative TV & movie assets might appease regulators.  British investigators have been probing allegations UK newspaper journalists hacked into phones & bribed public officials in the hunt for scoops.  The probe has caused the company to abandon its bid for full control of British Sky Broadcasting.  A split could help the company avoid being forced to sell off its remaining stake, worth $6.9B.  NWS rose $1.68.

The price of gas at the pump has dropped to the lowest level in 5 months, giving drivers some relief ahead of the Jul 4 holiday.  The national average fell to $3.40 & gas is now below $3 in South Carolina & under $4 in every other state in the continental US.  Americans are now spending roughly $200M per day less at the pump than in early Apr when gas peaked at $3.94.  Yet the savings hasn't encouraged more driving.  Consumers are buying about 5% less gasoline than they did last year, even though a gallon is 18¢ less.  Saving a few dollars at the pump also does only so much for consumer psychology.  Worries about the global economy are keeping oil near 8-month lows.  Call this muted good news.

Today's rally isn't very meaningful.  Maybe it's sort of relief rally.  Relief comes from not hearing terrible news from Europe.  Cyprus is talking to China, looking for a bailout loan.  Greece  looks like it's stuck in the mud at a time when it needs action.  Spain & Italy are paying a lot more to borrow money at new auctions.  India does not get a lot of attention, but this major economy has major problems.  Then there's the US economy which looks like is huffing & puffing just to get a grade of C.  Lower gas prices at the pump are not giving it a boost as macro economic worries are on the minds of many.  Dow has not strayed far from 12½K for the last 6 weeks.  There was a little selling going into the close (like yesterday), not  good sign for the next day.
