China will step up policy fine-tuning in H2 to support economic growth, although there are signs of stabilization in the economy, the official Xinhua news agency quoted Premier Wen Jiabao as saying.  Wen affirmed the gov's resolve to maintain its long-standing controls on the property sector.  The gov will take steps to improve the domestic investment environment & diversify its export market.  China would also increase fiscal & monetary policy support to the economy in H2.  The comments were made with business leaders & academics, including former World Bank chief economist Justin Lin.  These comments are broadly in line with official pro-growth statements made in the wake of H1 GDP data which showed the economy in Q2 had expanded at its slowest pace in more than 3 years.  The Chinese economy needs a little extra juice.

Pfizer Schedules Animal Unit IPO as Profit Beats Estimates

Pfizer, a Dow stock, posted a 25% jump in Q2 net income due to aggressive cost cutting & lower restructuring & other charges, shaking off the expected plunge in revenue from generic competition to cholesterol fighter Lipitor, the world's top-selling drug.  EPS was 43¢, up from 33¢ last year.  Excluding $2.1B in charges before taxes, adjusted EPS was 62¢, 8¢ above the forecast.  Charges included $1.2B for asset writedowns & $474M in legal charges, mainly for litigation over its hormone replacement medicines.  Revenue totaled $15.06B, down 9% but above expectations of $14.93B.  Generic competition reduced sales by about $1.8B, mainly because of lower Lipitor sales (which had peak annual global sales of $13B).  Early sales losses were slowed by the unprecedented strategy to keep patients on its brand as long as possible.  In Q2, US Lipitor sales nosedived to $296M from $1.4B a year ago & global sales slumped 53%to $1.2B.  Still, "We kept three times more (market) share than has traditionally occurred" after a big drug's patent expired, CEO Ian Read said.  "We added hundreds of millions of dollars of profitability to the company, as well as enabling patients to stay on the brand."  Newer drugs, particularly pain reliever Lyrica and Prevnar 13 saw sales jump just over 10%.  Total pharmaceutical sales fell 10%, to $13.1B.  Sales of veterinary medicines edged up 3% to $1.09B & sales of consumer health care products, such as ChapStick & Centrum vitamins, increased 8% to $768M.  PFE expects action from the FDA soon on 2 experimental drugs that have run into trouble.  PFE will file in mid-Aug to sell as much as 20% of its animal-health unit in an IPO.  The stock rose 38¢ & has a good chart over the last year.

Enbridge Energy Partners, a major MLP, Q2 earnings fell 28% on lower selling prices for natural gas liquids.  Results were below expectations for adjusted earnings & revenue.  Earnings were 33¢ per unit compared with 51¢ a year earlier.  Excluding items such as hedging gains, it would have earned 23¢ per unit.  The forecast was for earnings of 31¢ per unit.  Revenue plunged 35% to $1.55B from $2.37B last year ago & well below the $1.77B forecast.  The recent price drop in natural gas liquids was partly offset by higher pipeline revenue.  EEP also announced that it will increase the quarterly distribution to 54.35¢ per unit, a 2.1% increase that was in line with its goal of raising annual distributions by 2-5%.  EEP also has a companion corp, EEQ, which tracks the price of the units & pays a stock div based on the distribution.  The units rose 79¢.

This was another listless day as markets wait for the results of the Federal Reserve meeting tomorrow.  The following day, ECB will make a much bigger announcement.  Everybody is guessing what actions it can take to ease the euro debt mess.  Another round of bond buying is expected.  But it has just so much money, not to mention, when it ends, market forces will probably drag bond prices down, forcing yields up.  Dow gained 128 in Jul & remains above 13K, important for those watching technical signs.

Markets fluctaute after consumer confidence data

Dow hovered near breakeven all day with selling into the close.  It finished down 43, decliners ahead of advancers 4-3 & NAZ slid 2.  The Financial Index dropped 2 to the 213s, profit taking with the index still up 38 in Q1.  The MLP index fell 1½ to the 395s & the REIT index was up a fraction in the 253s to its yearly highs.  The chart below shows the run for an ETF that tracks the Alerian MLP index & it's pretty, although it's had tough going in the last month. Junk bond funds were mixed but Treasuries rallied after their recent sell-off.  Oil did little after rumors about the US releasing oil from its strategic reserves.  The immediate effect could lower prices, but the downward pressure on prices should not last.  Gold pulled back slightly after yesterday's rally.

Enbridge Venture Plans New Oil Pipes to Gulf

Photo:   Bloomberg

Enbridge Inc (ENB) & Enterprise Products Partners (EPD) will more than double the capacity of the Seaway Pipeline, easing a major oil glut in the US that has led to an unprecedented distortion in crude markets.  The expansion would add 450K barrels per day (bpd) of capacity to the Seaway system, raising its capacity to 850K bpd by mid-2014.  The company also plans to increase the size of its Flanagan South Pipeline from Flanagan, Illinois to Cushing, Oklahoma, to a 36-inch diameter line with an initial capacity of 585K bpd.  The estimated cost would increase to $2.8B from $1.9B.   ENB share of the cost of the Seaway pipeline twin line & extension is expected to be about $1B.  The companies are racing to unlock a glut of crude in the Midwest, which has built up over the year due to rising supplies from Canada & North Dakota.  Ballooning inventories at Cushing, the storage hub for US crude has led to a greater price difference between US crude & the European benchmark Brent.  The US crude discount to Brent hit a record $28 in Oct, but the spread is now around $18.  "Enbridge's Gulf Coast Access projects give Bakken and western Canadian producers timely, economical and reliable options to deliver a variety of crudes to refinery hubs throughout the heart of North America and now as far as the Gulf Coast," said Patrick D. Daniel, CEO of ENB said.  It's MLP subsidiary, Enbridge Energy (EEP), will build & operate the extension of its pipeline which comes down from Canada.  EEP units slipped 4¢.

Lennar posted a sharp jump in new orders & said it was seeing real signs of recovery in the housing market.  "The housing market and the overall economy 0are stabilizing and a very real trend is beginning to take shape," CEO Miller said.  Q1 new orders jumped 33% to 3022 homes.  LEN has been able to increase prices & reduce sales incentives in some of its communities.  Orders have been increasing for 4 straight qtrs as low interest rates & home prices have helped improve sentiments towards owning a home.  Homebuilder sentiment in Mar was the highest level since Jun 2007.  Permits for homebuilding neared a 3½ year high in Feb reinforcing views that home building would add to economic growth this year for the first time since 2005.  However, CEO Miller warned that the recovery process would not be smooth.  "The stabilization process after a full seven year decline in housing is rocky and erratic and is certainly not yet broad-based," Miller said.  He said recovery will emanate from the most desirable markets & spread slowly outward over the next few years.  The stock rose 1.22 (5%).

Walgreen, a Dividend Aristocrat, posted a 7.6% decline in quarterly profit as it filled fewer prescriptions due to the loss of a contract & a mild flu season.  WAG stopped filling prescriptions for patients in the Express Scripts (ESRX) after the companies failed to agree on a new contract.  The number of prescriptions filled at comparable WAG stores fell 8.6% in Jan & 9.5% during the first 28 days of Feb.  EPS was 78¢ in fiscal Q2 versus 80¢ a year earlier.  Sales rose 0.8% to $18.6B & sales at stores open at least a year, or same-store sales, fell 1.5%.  The stock rose 41¢, but has a drab chart over the last year.

Dow is having another excellent month & qtr.  It's up 245 in Mar & almost 1K in Q1.  The major driver has been improved economic data in the US with stronger factory output & more hiring of workers leading to a lower unemployment rate.  But earnings season begins in 2 weeks & there is a lot of nervousness which has been holding back buyers in recent weeks.  Also, gas at the pump is pushing $3.90 which compares with an all time record of $4.11.  High priced gas has always been a major negative for the stock market.

European debt crisis worries grow, taking markets lower

After staging a recovery from early losses, stocks sank in the last hour.  Dow finished down 190, decliners over advancers 3-1 & NAZ was 46 lower.  Bank stocks suffered a similar fate, with major selling in the last hour of trading.

The MLP index fell 1 to 366 & the REIT index was off 2 to 223.  Junk bond funds were mixed & Treasuries were higher on growing unrest in the European debt mess.  Oil climbed solidly above $100 a barrel, the first time since Jul.  Gold continued to fluctuate in the the mid 1700s where it has been all week.

A Dem on the "supercommittee" questioned whether Reps are still interested in negotiating after the panel's top GOP member said Reps have "gone as far as we feel we can go" on tax hikes.  A sense of deep pessimism has gripped the supercommittee, & judging from the limited public statement by panel members, a debt bargain could be out of reach.  "We need to find out whether our Republican colleagues want to continue to negotiate or whether they've drawn a hard line in the sand," said supercommittee Dem Chris Van Hollen of Maryland. "The question is whether they've kind of said 'take it or leave it.' "  Yesterday Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, said that the bipartisan debt supercommittee is "somewhat stymied for the moment" because panel Dems are insisting on tax increases of up to $1T in exchange for cost curbs on rapidly spiraling benefit programs such as Medicare & Social Security.  Whopper deficits are an enormous problem & when it domes to solving the problem, this committee is stuck in the mud.

AMR, parent of American Airlines, stock fell near an 8-year-low as American Airlines pushed union workers to accept contracts that would boost productivity.  Compromise is possible if the pilots accept that it will become a smaller carrier.  American tried to wrap up a contract with pilots this week by making an offer with 2 options but union leaders balked, leaving the talks in limbo.  A deal with the pilots' union could establish a precedent for deals with flight attendants & mechanics, who are represented by separate unions.  But leaders of the 3 unions are angry about what they see as overly generous executive compensation while workers continue to labor under wage & benefit cuts they accepted in 2003.  The stock fell today, taking it below $2. If the airline fails, the entire economy will fell its effects.

Enbridge Inc (ENB), a prominent Canadian energy company & the general partner for Enbridge Enrergy Parts (EEP), said it would use its pending $1.2B acquisition of ConocoPhillips’ (COP) 50% stake of the Seaway Crude Pipeline System to clear up a bottleneck of oil in the Midwest.  It will reverse the flow of the pipeline with 50% Seaway pipeline owner & operator Enterprise Product Partners (EPD) to ship oil to export terminals on the US Gulf Coast.  The move would draw down crude backed up at Cushing, Okla, a primary pipeline hub that also serves as the delivery point for oil futures traded in NY.  This news helped send oil futures up more than 3% to $102 on the prospects for lower supplies at Cushing.  Shares of the 3 energy companies were little changed.  The graph below is for ENB, the Canadian energy giant traded on NYSE.

Warnings about the impact of Europe's debt crisis on the global economy brought on selling, especially in the last hour,  Optimism about the US economy limited losses earlier, but bulls went home early.  The exposure banks have to European sovereign debts is unclear & there are fears losses could be substantial.  Banks are cutting jobs with Citi (C) saying it may cut 3K (adding to already high unemployment totals).  Dow could not hold 12K which it has remained near for the last month.  The last time it rose thru 12K, was last Dec when all those smart guys were busy revising upward their projections for 2011.  Hmmm!  Between deficit issues in Europe & the US, the stock market will be challenged.
