Lower markets on disapppointing China trade data

Dow lost 42, decliners over advancers 5-4 & NAZ fell 10.  The Financial Index slipped a fraction to just above 200.  The M:P index was up 1+ to 391 & the REIT index was flat at 262.  Junk bond funds were a tad lower & Treasuries gained after a 2 week decline.  Oil fell the most in a week, paring its weekly gain, as China's export growth slowed & the Intl Energy Agency cut global oil demand forecasts.  Gold keeps plodding along, just above $1600.

US import prices unexpectedly fell in Jul for the 4th straight month as costs declined for imported oil, industrial supplies & even many consumer goods.  Overall import prices dropped 0.6% according to the Labor Dept.  Import prices have only risen once in the last 8 months & were expected to rise 0.1% in Jul.  Much of the decline has been due to a drop in the cost of oil.  Prices fell for goods & services bought from most trading partners, including China, Mexico & the EU.  That could be a sign of the recent cooling in the global economy, which has been largely caused by Europe's debt crisis.  Prices of Chinese imports dropped 0.2% in Jul.  Prices for imported petroleum slipped 1.6% in Jul. Stripping out fuels & food, import prices were down 0.4%.  Many prices for consumer goods fell.  Excluding autos, prices for consumer goods were down 0.1%.

China July Exports Rise 1% Vs Economists’ Estimate for 8%

Photo:   Bloomberg

China's exports rose 1% in Jul from a year earlier while imports increased 4.7%, resulting in a trade surplus of $25.1B according to the customs bureau.  The growth in overseas shipments compares with the 8% estimate, an import gains of 7% & a trade surplus of $35.1B.  Gov reports showed industrial output growth was the slowest in 3 years, retail sales trailed estimates & the inflation rate fell to a 30-month low, adding pressure on the gov to increase stimulus.  The yuan's appreciation against the dollar has ground to a halt this year as the Chinese gov argues that the currency is near "equilibrium" & austerity measures in Europe weigh on export demand.  The currency had declined 1.02% this year.

JC Penney reported a bigger-than-expected loss & plummeting sales during Q2, as its customers remain confused by the new pricing strategy that ditched hundreds of sales in favor of everyday lower prices, marking the 2nd straight qtr of steep sales declines since the plan was introduced in Feb.  The company also withdrew its profit guidance for the year.  But investors appeared to be encouraged by CEO Ron Johnson's soothing words that he's seeing some hopeful signs in the business since early Aug.  Johnson noted that customer counts have improved & that changes it made to the new pricing plan Aug 1 are starting to resonate with shoppers.  Under Johnson, JCP is transforming everything from the items it stocks to store design.  But the riskiest move has been its pricing, which is turning out to be an even tougher sale to shoppers than previously expected.  The loss per share was 67¢ in the qtr ended Jul 28 which  compares with EPS or 7¢ a year ago.  Revenue tumbled almost 23% to $3B.  Revenue at stores open at least a year fell 21.7%, worse than the 18.9% drop the prior qtr.   Excluding one-time items, the loss was 37¢ worse than the 26¢ loss expected on revenue of $3.2B.  The company said that its gross profit margins fell to 33.2%, down from 38.3% a year ago.  But Johnson described the balance sheet as "rock solid."  The company said it ended the qtr with about $888M in cash & cash equivalents. The stock gained $1.38 on those soothing words.

Markets continue to drift along.  Today there is a downward bias, but it's not that serious.  The chart below shows Dow has not been doing very much this week after the big gain on Mon.  Some traders probably started their weekend holidays early.  But fundamental problems (euro debt mess, stalling China growth & a sluggish US economy) remain.  Dow needs 300 to reach a new yearly high.

Markets slump on increased Euro worries

After starting higher, selling came back to bring the averages into the red.  Dow fell 33 (closing at its lows), decliners over advancers 2-1 & NAZ lost 19.  More selling in bank stocks took the Financial Index down 3 to 191, a 3½ month low.  The MLP index was down a fraction to another new low in May (in the 377s) while the REIT index fell 3 to the 252s (13 below its recent yearly highs).  Junk bond funds edged higher & Treasuries were a little higher.  Oil & gold continued to see a lot of selling, both at multi monthly lows.

The delinquency rate for mortgages declined in Q1 to the lowest level since 2008 as an improving job market helped more borrowers pay their bills & tighter lending standards resulted in fewer defaults. The share of home loans at least 30 days late dropped to 7.4 % from 7.58% in Q4 according to the Mortgage Bankers Assoc.  The rate peaked at 10.1% in Q1 of 2010 & was last lower in Q3 of 2008 (Lehman collapse), when it was 6.99%.  “Delinquencies are clearly continuing to improve,” Michael Fratantoni, the group’s vice president of research and economics, said. “Newer delinquencies, loans one payment past due as of March 31, are down to the lowest level since the middle of 2007, indicating fewer new problems we will need to deal with in the future.”  Falling delinquencies may help limit foreclosures, important for a recovery in the housing market as low interest rates combine with decreased prices to stimulate demand.  Housing affordability reached a new high in Q1 & sales of previously owned homes rose 5.3% from a year earlier, according to the National Association of Realtors.  Housing starts increased 2.6% to an annual pace of 717K in Apr, beating estimates.  Rates for 30-year fixed loans declined to a record 3.83% in the current week, according to Freddie Mac.  Of course, increases are measured off depressed levels, but at least they show the market is trending in the right direction.

Target, a Dividend Aristocrat, raised its profit outlook after reporting better-than-expected Q1 results that were boosted by increased spending on food & cheap chic fashions.  TGT, which mixes stylish clothes & trendy decor under the same roof as toothpaste & cereal, recently has had success drawing customers into stores with 2 growth initiatives. It has been offering a larger selection of foods & a program it started in 2010 that gives shoppers a 5% discount when they pay with Target-branded credit & debit cards.  EPS rose to $1.04, above 99¢ a year earlier.  Excluding costs associated with its expansion into Canada next year, EPS would have been $1.11.  Revenue increased 5.9% to $16.9B.  These results beat EPS of $1.02 on revenue of $16.8B expected.  Revenue at stores opened at least a year rose 5.3%, the strongest performance in 6 years for that period.  The strong showing came despite a weak finish to the quarter.  To boost sales, the company has teamed up with unique specialty shops to offer limited edition merchandise, from dog biscuits to platform shoes.  The shops were launched earlier this month.  The discounter plans to create mini shops of Apple (AAPL) products in 25 of its stores this year.  The company also preparing to expand into Canada next year, its first expansion outside the US & will open the first of 125-135 stores in Canada at former Zellers locations.  Based on better-than-expected Q1 results, TGT raised its full-year profit guidance by 5¢ & now expects EPS to be $4.60-$4.80, better than the average forecast of $4.28.  CEO Gregg Steinhafel said that company officials remain "confident in our strategy" despite that they expect "the current economic recovery will continue to be slow and uneven."  On a tough day in the markets, the stock was up 24¢.

J.C. Penney Reports First-Quarter Loss Following Sales Slump

Photo:   Bloomberg

All retail news was not good.  JC Penney posted a Q1 loss & sales that fell more than expected.  Sales slumped 20% to $3.15B, trailing the $3.43B estimate.  The loss equaled 75¢ cents a share, compared with profit of 28¢ last year.  As a result, the div will be discontinued.  The $163M loss is a new challenge for CEO Ron Johnson, whose appointment in Jun caused the shares to surge amid buzz that he would bring some Apple (AAPL)- style magic to the ailing retailer.  He vowed to flip the traditional department-store strategy upside-down by turning stores into a collection of branded shops & simplifying pricing into three tiers to wean consumers off discounts.  “Sales and profitability have been tougher than anticipated during the first 13 weeks,” Johnson said.  “While we have work to do to educate the customer on our pricing strategy and to drive more traffic to our stores, we are confident in our vision to become America’s favorite store.”  The company said discontinuing div will result in cash savings of about $175M annually.  In Q1, the company incurred $76M in restructuring & management-transition charges.  Excluding those items, the EPS loss was 25¢, below the estimate for a loss of 8¢.  There will be additional restructuring charges throughout 2012.  Q1 same-store sales tumbled 18.9%.  The stock plunged $6.57 (20%) to $26.75.

Dow has fallen 615 from its close in Apr.  Today was a good example of good news can't get no respect.  One story after another was positive but the markets kept slipping & sliding.  Meanwhile Facebook (FB) is pumping the hype machine for a successful IPO on Fri.  Maybe the money raised from selling stocks will go into FB, but that should not be long lasting.  As bad as the Greek debt mess is, the Spanish debt mess keeps growing.  The effects of Euro uncertainties can be seen in bank stocks.  For example, Citi (C), which has had a nice recovery, is down $11 to $27 in 2 just months.  AAPL was down $12 today to the $541s ($102 below its highs last month).  The markets are hurting badly.

Lower stocks on higher European worries

Dow slid 14, decliners ahead of advancers 3-2 & NAZ rose 12 (helped by a 9 point rise for Apple to a new record).  Bank stocks drifted lower, taking the Financial Index down a fraction in the 209s.  The index has been going sideways since mid Mar.  The MLP index was up fraction to 391, but has had a tough go of it this year, while the REIT index fell 1 to 251.  Junk bond funds slipped & Treasuries rose, bringing lower yields.  Gold rose, as investors covered short positions, after a sharp 2-day pullback, & a rally in oil also buoyed the precious metal that sank earlier this week when investors grew pessimistic about further US monetary easing.

JC Penney will lay off 600 workers (13% of the staff) at its headquarters in Texas, as the company looks to streamline its operations amid a major reinvention of the business.  It will also eliminate 300 more jobs at its customer call center in Pittsburgh when it closes in Jul.  The moves come as the new CEO Ron Johnson is transforming every aspect of the business, from pulling back on constant promotions to rethinking the brands it carries.  "We are going to operate like a start-up," said Johnson in a press release issued Thursday that didn't cite specific job cuts. "We are going to be nimble, quick to learn, quicker to react and totally committed to realizing our vision to become America's favorite store."  Johnson said the cuts involved "some very difficult decisions" but were essential for the business.  The company had said then it was targeting $900M in expense cuts to be completed over the first 2 years of its transformation, including $200M in savings from headquarters as well as $400M in cost savings at store operations & $300M in advertising savings.  The changes are expected to reduce expenses below 30% of sales by the end of next year.  Before the layoffs, JCP had 4400 employees at its headquarters.  While not significant at the big picture level, this will add to the unemployed looking for work.  The stock was off 49¢.

The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage was mostly unchanged this week, as the cost of home-buying & refinancing remained near record lows.  Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said that the rate on the 30-year loan fell slightly to 3.98% from 3.99% last week.  In Feb, the rate touched 3.87%, the lowest since long-term mortgages began in the 1950s.  The average rate on the 15-year fixed mortgage also fell, to 3.21% from 3.23%.  That's above the record low of 3.13% hit last month.  Mortgage rates have been below 4% for all but one week since early Dec which has helped lift the outlook for housing after 4 sluggish years of home sales.  Jan & Feb made up the best winter for re-sales in 5 years, when the housing crisis began & builders are more confident about the market. In February, they requested the most permits to build single-family homes & apartments in more than 3 years.  Applications for new mortgages rose in Mar & there was a sharp rise in the average loan size, suggesting a bigger appetite for home loans.  The average size of mortgage applications has increased by $20K since DecK, to  $235K last month.  A hopeful sign for housing.

The President signed bipartisan jobs legislation that will help small businesses & make it easier for startups to raise capital, saying it could be a "game-changer" for entrepreneurs dreaming of founding the next Microsoft (MSFT), a Dow stock, or Facebook.  "When their ideas take root, we get inventions that can change the way we live," Obama said.  "And when their businesses take off, more people become employed."  While receiving bipartisan support, some Dems raised concerns that the bill softened investment protections enacted after the dot.com excesses & Wall Street meltdowns with changes that could lead to fraud & abuse.  The main part of the bill would phase in SEC regulations over a 5-year period to let smaller companies go public sooner.  Firms that have annual gross revenues of less than $1B would enjoy this "emerging growth company" status.

Investors weighed optimism about the American job market with renewed concern over Europe’s debt crisis & the latter was of greater concern today.  Earnings season kicks off next week with Alcoa (AA), a Dow stock, reporting on Tues.  Analysts are looking for a 5¢ loss versus a profit last year.  Dow gave up 152 this week but was able to hold above 13K.  S&P 500 has been waffling around 1400 (closing at 1398 today) without breaking thru since mid Mar.  The stock market looks very tired after a long run.
