Markets rise on hopes for a Spanish bailout

Dow gained 93 (closing at its highs), advancers ahead of decliners 5-2 & NAZ was up 27.  Bank stocks saw buying in the PM, taking the Financial Index up 2+ to the 189s to recoup most of the losses in Jun.

The MLP index slipped pocket change in the 363s but the REIT index rose 3+ to the 252s.  Junk bond funds rose along with stocks & Treasuries also were higher.  Oil fell for a 2nd day on concern that an economic slowdown in Europe & the US will worsen & curb fuel demand.  Gold saw more selling pressure, bringing it nearer its yearly lows.

Now Spain is expected to ask the eurozone for help with recapitalizing its banks by this weekend, becoming the 4th country to seek assistance.  Finance ministers from the single currency area will hold a conference call tomorrow to discuss a Spanish request for aid, although no figure for the assistance has yet been fixed.  Later the Eurogroup will hold a separate call to discuss approving the request.  "The announcement is expected for Saturday afternoon," one of the EU officials said.  This comes after Fitch cut credit rating Spanish debt by 3 notches to BBB yesterday, highlighting the banking sector's exposure to bad property loans & to contagion from Greece's debt crisis.  "The government of Spain has realized the seriousness of their problem," a senior German official said.  He added that an agreement needed to be reached before a Greek election on Jun 17 which could cause market panic & increase the threat of Greece leaving the euro zone.  The European Commission's spokesman on economic affairs said Spain had made no request for aid but the eurozone stood ready to help.  This situation is fluid.

US wholesale businesses increased inventory stockpiles at a faster rate in Apr, responding to a gain in sales & the increase could be a good sign for economic growth in Q2.  The Commerce Dept said stockpiles grew 0.6% at wholesale, double the Mar gain.  Sales by wholesale businesses jumped 1.1% in Apr, nearly 3 times the Mar sales gain. Stockpiles at the wholesale stood at $483B in Apr, 25.6% above the post-recession low of $385B in Sep 2009.  It would take roughly 5 weeks to exhaust all wholesale stockpiles at the Apr sales pace, considered a healthy time frame & suggests businesses will keep restocking to meet demand.  When businesses step up restocking, they order more goods which generally leads to increased factory production & higher economic growth.  Slower inventory growth held back growth in Q1 when GDP grew at an annual rate of 1.9%.  The increase in wholesale inventories was bigger than expected which might signal that inventory growth will pick up & boost growth in Q2.  But stockpile growth largely depends on the spending habits of US consumers & businesses.

Time Warner raised $1B in a 2-part offering at its lowest coupons on record.  The company sold $500M of 3.4% 10-year notes that yield 180 basis points more than similar-maturity Treasuries & $500M of 4.9% 30-year bonds with a 225 basis-point spread.  Both spreads are lower than initial talk of about 200 & 245 more than Treasuries.  Proceeds be used for general corp purposes.  In the last 12 months general purposes include $7B of share repurchases. The stock was up 22¢.

After all is said & done, this turned out to be the best week of the year.  Dow gained 425, not a bad week.  But it started from depressed levels, down over 2K from its highs 10 weeks ago.  There is a good chance that markets will rally on Mon if bailout IV goes thru.  But Spain & Greece are still very iffy.  In addition, there are other weak countries, like Italy which has been forgotten.  MLPs had been market leaders while stocks rebounded from recession lows.  But they have lost steam this year.  The MLP index is back to where it was in Oct (while Dow managed a 1K rise).

Markets adrift after weak economic data

Dow was under water all day, but nothing serious.  Much of the early losses were recovered, giving it a net loss of only 10, decliners ahead of advancers 4-3 & NAZ had a gain of 9.  Bank stocks led the selling (not a good sign for the overall markets), bringing the Financial Index down 2 to under 208.

The MLP index fell a fraction tp 399 & the REIT was down a smidgen in the 262s (its high since 2008).  Junk bond funds were mixed & Treasuries higher (see below).  Oil fell after the Energy Dept reported that crude inventories surged to the highest level in more than 21 years & production along with imports climbed.  Gold slipped $8, still sloshing around the mid 1600s.

Treasury 10-year yields approached the lowest level in almost 3 months as manufacturing contracted in Europe & private employers in the US added fewer workers than forecast, boosting demand for the safest assets.  The Treasury delayed decisions on whether to sell floating-rate securities & bills with negative yields at gov auctions for the first time. The Treasury will issue $32B in 3-year notes, $24B in 10-year debt & $16B in 30-year bonds beginning May 8 (the same amounts sold in each refunding month since Nov 2010).  The 10-year note yield fell 3 basis points to 1.92%.  The Treasury said it sees benefits in the issuance of floating-rate notes & a decision will be made “at a later date.”  While there are good reasons to have negative yields at Treasury auctions, an official said, no decision has been made & there are operational challenges.  Negative yields mean the holders will get less than the $1000 paid for each note at maturity.  A euro-region factory gauge based on a survey of purchasing managers slipped to a 34-month low of 45.9 from 47.7 in March (a reading below 50 indicates contraction).  German unemployment increased by 19K to 2.87, higher than the forecasted decline of 10K.  Weaker Euro data is increasing demand for Treasuries.  The concept of negative yields is eye-popping & a negative sign for stocks.

Time Warner Earnings Exceed Estimates on TV-Advertising Gains

Photo:   Bloomberg

A stronger box office slate, a new deal with Netflix (NFLX) & a better TV advertising climate contributed to growth at Time Warner in Q1.  Although earnings fell 11% because of restructuring charges, adjusted income beat expectations on the strengths of the company's movie studio & TV network businesses which offset weakness in the magazine division. EPS was 59¢ because there are fewer shares outstanding.  Excluding one-time factors, EPS was 67¢, better than the 64¢ expected.  The charges primarily related to shutting down a TV network in India & selling a school-fundraising business called QSP.  Adjusted EPS last year was 58¢.  Revenue grew 4% to $7B, ahead of expectations of $6.8B & $6.7B last year.  The cable TV networks revenue grew 3% to $3.6B.  Besides strong ad rates, the company benefited from better timing of March Madness basketball games & higher fees collected from US cable & satellite TV distributors.  That was offset partly by a decrease in content revenue.  TNT suffered from an NBA lockout, which delayed the start of the pro basketball season.  Although viewership has returned, the company hasn't been able to make as much money from NBA games this year along with higher expenses.  Warner Bros. studio had a 7% revenue increase to $2.8B, benefiting from higher licensing revenue of TV shows.  Revenue at the Time magazine division fell 3% to $773M as advertising & subscription revenue declined.  TWX reaffirmed its full-year outlook, saying adjusted EPS will grow by a low double-digit percentage from last year's $2.89.  The stock fell 63¢.

Target, a Dividend Aristocrat, will stop selling the Kindle from Amazon (AMZN), the latest in a series of brawls between the companies fueled by increasing competition of AMZN with brick & mortar retailers.  "Target is phasing out Amazon- and Kindle-branded products in the spring of 2012," a Target spokesperson said.  "We will continue to offer our guests a full assortment of e-readers and supporting accessories."  The decision includes the new Kindle Fire tablet, its range of Kindle e-readers & all accessories for the devices.  But TGT will still sell other e-readers& tablets.  Wal-Mart (WMT), a Dow stock & Dividend Aristocrat, will keep selling Kindles.  This move comes as TGT outfits some of its stores with special displays of Apple (AAPL) products, including the iPad, which competes with the Kindle Fire tablet.  Kindle Fire is tightly integrated with AMZN 's huge online retail store, which competes with TGT physical big-box outlets & its website.  TGT stock fell 3¢.

Dow had been down 80 in early trading, but buyers returned to limit the damage.  Its enormous rally since Oct remains intact although it has been sputtering in recent months.  Longer term, Dow has more than doubled off its lows just over 3 years ago, a mind boggling advance, with only a few minor setbacks.  For it to advance from here, the biggest question is the state of the US economy which may have run into a snag.  Once again, the jobs report on Fri will give clues about the economic recovery & be a big driver for the markets.

Mixed markets keep their eyes on European debt negotiations

Dow was up 5, advancers ahead of decliners 4-3 & NAZ rose 11.  The Financial Index added 1½ to the 198s (another high since late Jul) as buyers of bank stocks are not greatly worried about the Greek debt mess.

The MLP index fell 1 to the 386s & the REIT index was even.  Junk bond funds were mixed as were Treasuries.  Oil gave up much the gains early in the day & gold fell 12.

Greece protest

Athens, Greece
Photo:   Bloomberg

Greek PM Papademos began negotiating with leaders of the political parties supporting his gov as he tried to make up for lost time to secure the bailout II package.  He met with the chiefs today after delaying the gathering for a 2nd time in as many days as Greek officials & creditors haggled over terms.  An unscheduled meeting was held late last night with the troika to put final touches on a €130B ($172B) rescue plan.  Yesterday’s delay was just  another hitch in completing a package that’s been on the table since Jul.  That's more than 6 months with NOTHING to show for all the work!  “The situation is getting more problematic for Greece day by day,” an assistant to Chancellor Merkel said today.  “A day wasted in failing to tackle Greece’s administrative, budget and competitive problems is a bad day.”  Greeks need to reform “not for Brussels, Berlin or the IMF, but for their own sake.”  This tussle threatens to hold up a critical element of the plan: a debt swap to slice €100B off more than €200B of privately-held debt.  Don't worry, more meetings will be held tomorrow.   Bet money, nothing will be resolved as has been the case for sooo long.

A contract squabble between Walgreen (WAG & a Dividend Aristocrat) & Express Scripts (ESRX) has driven more customers to CVS, prompting that company to raise its 2012 EPSs forecast by 3¢.  CVS had said it would gain business because of the dispute & CEO Merlo said the company is seeing more prescription transfers than it expected.  CVS chances of retaining those customers improve the longer the impasse continues, especially once people refill their prescriptions a few times.  "As I have said in the past, we know that that pharmacy customer is the hardest person to lose, but once you lose them, it's the hardest person to get back," he said.  Q4 EPS rose nearly 4% to 81¢, above 75¢ in the prior year.  Adjusted EPS was 89¢, in line with expectations.  Revenue rose 15% to $28.3B, above the $28.1B expected.  Revenue from the PBM side jumped 32% to $15.9B.  For the full year, the company had EPS of $2.59 on $107.1B in revenue.  CVS forecasts 2012 EPS of $3.18-$3.28 which doesn't reflect a benefit from the WAG-ESRX dispute beyond Q1.  CVS gained 49¢.

Time Warner got a boost from its movie studio & cable TV networks in Q4 & the company expects growth to continue in 2012 even with the end of its Harry Potter franchise.  Q4 EPS grew slightly as revenue increased 5%.  Adjusted EPS & the growth forecast for 2012 topped expectations.  TWX also raised its dividend 11% & plans to expand a stock buyback program.  The company said growth in adjusted EPS should be in the low double-digit percentages this year (above adjusted EPS of $2.89 in 2011).  Q4 EPS was 76¢, compared with 68¢ a year earlier.  Adjusted for one-time items EPS was 94¢, beating expectations of 87¢.  Revenue grew to $8.2B from $7.8B a year earlier.  The div was raise to 26¢.  The company also announced plans to buy back up to $4B in stock, on top of the nearly $5B it had already repurchased since the beginning of 2011.  The stock was up a penny.

Markets continue to mark time, but that's a very impressive showing given the lack of progress for soooo long on bailout II for Greece.  The promise of low yields for another couple of years keeps high yielding sectors (MLPs, REITs, junk bond funds, etc.) in high demand.  All are at or near post recession highs & MLPs are just below the records reached 2 weeks ago.  Central banks are ready to do whatever is required to support the € which has been strong in the last month (currently about $1.32½, up from $1.27 last month).  But there is still a strong possibility, that despite the best intentions, this can quickly come unglued with protests & the contagion effect.  They are throwing around €100Bs which is scary to watch from the sidelines.
