Higher markets after Federal Reserve announcement

Dow rose 83, advancers ahead of decliners almost 4-1 & NAZ was up 31 (helped by a $27 rise for Apple).  The Financial Index was up only a fraction to the 191s (a 6 month high).

MLPs are flying again, taking the Alerian MLP Index up 3+ to the 401s, a new record high!!!  The REIT index also had a good day, up 3 to the 245s, a 6 month high & only 5 below its post 2008 recession high.  Junk bond funds were mixed but Treasuries gained after the FED announcement.  Oil rose after Federal Reserve pledged to keep interest rates low into 2014, boosting fuel demand.  Gold climbed with a $20 pop shown in the chart below.

The Federal Reserve (FED) downgraded its outlook for US economic growth this year but is slightly more optimistic about the unemployment rate.  The FED expects the economy to grow 2.2%-2.7% in 2012, down from the Nov forecast of 2.5%-2.9%.  Earlier it noted the weak but growing economy when it said it doesn't plan to raise its benchmark interest rate until late 2014.  Some members even wanted to push that back further.  Still, the FED expects unemployment to fall as low as 8.2%, improvement from bottom rate of 8.5% in the Nov forecast.  Inflation has been relatively tame & the FED doesn't see that changing over the next 3 years.  For the first time, the FED offered an official target for inflation, 2%.  The Fed did not specify a target for unemployment but said that unemployment of 5.2%- 6% would be consistent with its goal for a healthy economy.

German Chancellor Merkel insisted that Europe will remain an economic power only if it deepens the integration that has caused it so many problems.  The tone of Merkel's keynote address was not dramatically different from her measured norm, but it was positive enough to feed an emerging feeling among European power brokers that Germany (i.e. Europe) is finally becoming convinced that it needs to do whatever it takes to save the € from collapse.  "The message is that we are ready for more commitment. We are no longer making excuses," Merkel said.  If Europe doesn't integrate further, she said, "we will remain an interesting holiday destination for a long time, but we won't be able to produce prosperity for the people in Europe anymore."  Merkel pledged to do what is necessary to protect the € from collapse, & said greater European unity is needed to spark job creation & growth.  But she poured cold water on calls for Europe to ratchet up the financial firepower of its safety net for failing economies.  Germany is at the center of any rescue plan because it has the deepest pockets in Europe.  Let's see if the others are paying attention.

Abbott, a Dividend Aristocrat, reported a 12 % increase in Q4 profit with double-digit sales growth.  These results highlighted the rationale for splitting the company into 2, announced late last year, with top-selling drug Humira dominating the results, contributing $2.18B (20%) to sales.  EPS was $1.02, up from 92¢ last year.  Excluding one-time items, the company earned $1.45, up from $1.30 in 2010.  Total sales grew 4.1% to $10.4B.  Analysts were expecting EPS of $1.44 on revenue of $10.59B.  For 2012, ABT expects to earn $4.95-$5.05, compared with the average estimate of $5.02.   The branded drug business posted sales of $4.78B inQ4, an increase of 6.7%.  The stock slipped 75¢.

The FED gave a boost to the markets after it pledged to keep interest rates low for well into 2014.  The  Dow rose steadily, over 100, after hearing the news.  Breadth in the markets was good.  But the rally in Treasuries, taking the yield on the 10 year Treasury back below 2%, & the sharp rally for gold shows other investors were more interested in "risk averse."  Asian markets will follow this rally, but tomorrow may not bring a continuation after coooler heads have had a chance to think thru implications.  Among other things, the Greek debt mess drags on with no end in sight!

Markets decline on glum data from the Federal Reserve

Dow tried to rally but slipped into the red following gloomy news in the PM.  Dow fell 72, decliners over advancers 5-2 & NAZ sank 53 largely related to a cheerless earnings report form Apple (AAPL).  As usual, bank stocks were market leaders.  The decline for the Financial Index leaves it near its Oct highs (although far below its yearly highs & 65% below its record highs 4 years ago).

MLPs were pretty much even after losing early gains & REITs fell, taking the index down 3 to 212.  Junk bond funds were about 1% lower (after trading lower since the big sell-off in Aug) & Treasuries did little.  Oil dropped from a one-month high after a split emerged between France & Germany on proposals to increase the European bailout fund & the Federal Reserve described the pace of US economic growth as “modest.”  Gold fell for the 3rd straight day, losing all of the ground gained in this month's rally.

Fed Reports Modest Growth as Firms Voice Doubt on Recovery

Photo:   Bloomberg

The economic outlook grew dimmer in Sep, leading businesses to be wary of spending & of building up inventories ahead of the holiday sales season according to the Federal Reserve (FED).  Overall economic activity continued to expand in Sep, although many districts described the pace of growth as 'modest' or 'slight' & contacts generally noted weaker or less certain outlooks for business conditions," according to findings compiled by the regional Fed Bank of Chicago.  It found that consumer spending was up slightly in most districts, led by auto sales & tourism. There was also some increase in business spending, notably for construction & mining equipment & for new-car inventories.  Although a few districts saw some pickup in construction, "overall conditions for both residential & commercial real estate remained weak," the survey said.  Loan demand was generally weaker except for mortgage refinancing.  Businesses were more cautious in the face of a more uncertain economic outlook that the survey said was weighing on future spending plans.  This is a continuation of uncertainty & doubts about the economic recovery.,

A two-day general strike that unions vow will be the largest in years grounded flights, disrupted public transport and shut down everything from shops to schools in Greece on Wednesday, as at least 50,000 protesters converged in central Athens. All sectors, from dentists, state hospital doctors and lawyers to shop owners, tax office workers, pharmacists, teachers and dock workers walked off the job ahead of a Parliamentary vote Thursday on new austerity measures. Greek lawmakers have granted initial approval to a new austerity bill, but spending cuts & tax hikes have sparked fury on the streets of Athens, with a 154-141 vote.  A 2nd vote on the bill's articles will be held tomorrow in the Parliament.  Only after that vote will the bill have passed.  Before the vote, riots broke out in central Athens during a demonstration by about 100K people on the first of a 2-day general strike to protest the bill.  The measures include new tax hikes, further pension & salary cuts, the suspension on reduced pay of 30K public servants & the suspension of collective labor contracts.  This is far from a done deal, despite the enthusiasm shown in the stock market.

ABBOTT TO SEPERATE INTO TWO COMPANIES

Photo:   Bloomberg

Abbott Labs, a Dividend Aristocrat, long known for selling a mix of drugs, medical implants & baby formula, will spin off its branded drug business to become 2 separate companies with more distinct identities.  The split-up marks an abrupt shift for the 123-year old company, which sells a broad range of products from stents to arthritis drugs to contact lens solution.  While many pharma companies weathered losses as the patents on their blockbuster drugs expired, ABT has continued to post double-digit sales growth, chiefly because of its anti-inflammatory drug Humira.  CEO Miles White suggested the split is about crafting 2 companies with clearer messages for investors.  "What happened here is the pharma piece got so big, and is so different, that these two investments make sense separately, and both are of a critical mass and size that they have great sustainability going forward as independent companies," White said.  The stock gained 81¢ in a declining market.  Other big pharmas, starting with JNJ (JNJ), & Dow stock & another Dividend Aristocrat, will watch this situation.

The FED report about business conditions along with a split between France & Germany on ways to boost the European bailout fund were too much for the stock market.  Greece remains a volatile situation, barely recognized in today's markets, & that's not the only European country with sovereign debt issues.  Bulls tried to take the Dow thru the 10.6K ceiling, but were turned back again as the VIX, volatility index, shot up 3+ to 35.  The chart shows Dow failed 4 times to reach new interim highs, not a good sign.  Meanwhile, it's mired in a sideways trading range between 10.6K & 11.6K.

Markets creep higher, helped by Tiffany's strong earnings

Dow started down, went into the black in the PM but selling in the last hour limited gains.  Dow finished up 8 , advancers over decliners better than 2-1 & NAZ gained 21.  Bank stocks muddled along with the Financial Index near its multi month lows, a negative sign for the markets where bank stocks are supposed to be leaders.

The MLP index was up 1 & the REIT index rose 3 to the 245s (5 below the 2011 highs).  Junk bond funds had modest gains (money flowing away from European bonds) & Treasuries rose on concern the IMF may withhold aid for Greece next month &  a report showed the US economic growth is losing momentum.  The yield on the 10 year Treasury bond fell to a new 5 month low, now it will test if 3% can hold.  Oil fell from a 2-week high as the US economy grew less than forecast in Q1 while gold slipped below 1520.

Giving a high dose of niacin to people with heart disease who are already taking a cholesterol-lowering statin does nothing more to prevent heart attacks & strokes according to a gov study. The clinical trial was stopped 18 months early because there was no sign that high-dose niacin reduced heart problems in people on statins whose low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, the so-called "bad" cholesterol, was already well-controlled.  Patients were treated with  Niaspan from Abbott (ABT) & Zoxor from Merck (MRK).  Researchers said niacin raised levels of high-density lipoproteins, or HDL, the "good" cholesterol, but that did not translate into fewer fatal & non-fatal heart problems.  "Although we did not see the expected clinical benefit, we have answered an important scientific question about treatment for cardiovascular disease," Dr. Susan Shurin, acting director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, said.  ABT fell 83¢ & MRK was down 31¢.

Tiffany (TIF) sales in Japan did much better than expected after the Mar earthquake & sales soared in its other markets during Q1.  The company now only expects a modest decline in sales for the year in Japan where it gets 18% of total sales.  Sales in Japan, with 57 stores, rose 7% during the qtr. Excluding the impact of the strong ¥, sales fell 3% after TIF initially forecast they would fall 15%.  There has been no "meaningful resistance" from customers over paying higher prices put in place to mitigate rising gold, silver & diamond costs, Tiffany said.  EPS rose to 63¢ (qtr ending Apr 30) from 50¢ last year.  Excluding one-time items, EPS was 67¢, beating  forecasts of 57¢.  TIF raised full-year profit outlook by 10¢, now expecting EPS of $3.45-$3.55 in the fiscal year that ends Jan 2012 (higher than forecasts of $3.33).   The stock rose $6.00 to a new record.

Little was decided today on very low volume.  Low volume means just a few modest size trades can be the difference between being up or down.  European problems drag on while the IMF is electing a new leader.  Greece is rebellious, not a good sign.  MLPs are muddling along.  It's good the 350 resistance held for the index, but after last week's bounce it has gone nowhere.  New issues were mixed, Freescale Semiconductor (FSL) was up 33¢ (from a lowered offering price) & Spirit Airlines fell 45¢.  IPOs for internet companies are in demand but ordinary companies will have to struggle selling their shares.  Tomorrow should bring even lower volume.

The MLP index was up only pennies in the 279s & the REIT index was up a small fraction in the 237s.  Junk bond funds were little changed & the Treasury market was quiet.  Oil rose for a 2nd day ahead of the weekly gov report on supply levels, amid signs that recovery in the world’s biggest economy is supporting fuel consumption.  Gold rose above $1,500 to another record as a weaker dollar & concern about debt & faster inflation spurred demand for an alternative investment.

The bulls are excited & having a good day as the sun enters Taurus.  After trading flat for a few months, Dow is at a new 2½ year high, very bullish.  But problems are lurking.  Gas at the pump rose to $3.84 yesterday & somewhat related, fighting continues in Libya.  Also, banks, traditional market leaders, are not leading.  Most important, gold is at new record levels.  But bigger picture, bulls have taken control of the markets again.
