Markets nervous over European debt negotiations

Dow fell 36, decliners over advancers 3-2 but NAZ was up 2.  The Financial Index fell 1+ to 190, still near its 6 month high.

The MLP index pulled back a fraction to just under its record 399 & the REIT index was up a smidgen in the 241s (another 6 month high).  Junk bond funds were mixed as were Treasuries following a recent sell-off.  Oil fell over concerns that the euro-zone debt crisis may spread.  Gold also lost ground, following a nice gain in Jan.

Verizon Posts Loss on Pension Costs, IPhone Boosts Expenses

Photo:   Bloomberg

Verizon, a Dow stock, paid dearly to put iPhones in the hands of subscribers, holding back profits in the hope that its customers will rack up higher monthly bills & stay loyal.  Q4 saw the launch of the iPhone 4S & it  sold sold 4.3M (7.7M smartphones total).   But higher sales meant lower profits.  VZ buys iPhones from Apple (AAPL) for $600 that are sold in stores for $200.  VZ lost $2B, or 71¢ in  Q4 which compares with income of 93¢ last year.  Excluding the pension effect & another one-time item, EPS was 52¢, a penny shy of the forecast.  Revenue rose 7.7% to $28.4B, in line with analysts' expectations.  Wireless accounted for all of the revenue increase, as the wireline division saw a small decrease.  Usually, the overall revenue increase is driven by higher monthly wireless service revenues, as it gains customers.  But this time, the largest contributor to the rise in revenue was phone sales, which doubled to $2.2B.  The stock fell 64¢.

Markets are doing little as they watch the Greek debt mess drone on.  The biggies are meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on a paid holiday to have a good time & decide little.  Earnings reports are OK but not spectacular.  But in all fairness, Dow is hanging in there, close to 11.8K ceiling, its highest level since it plummeted in late Jul.  While the Greek talks are in limbo, markets are not expected to do much.

Markets tumble on growing Greek debt worries

Stocks started weak & kept sinking, finishing close to their lows.  Dow fell 178, decliners ahead of advancers almost 5-1 & NAZ dropped 47.  Bank stocks led the way down, although almost all groups participated in the decline.  The Financial Index hasn't been this low in over 6 months.

Prime Minister Papandreou said he will reshuffle his cabinet & seek a vote of confidence for his new gov in Parliament, after coalition talks with opposition parties failed.  The discussions came as anti-austerity riots hit central Athens after the gov Socialists proposed a new package of austerity measures.  The measures must be passed by Parliament before the end of the month if Greece can continue receiving funding from its intl bailout.  The Greek drama plays on & the clouds are darker.

J&J Stops Making Drug-Coated Heart Stents Amid Falling Sales

Photo:   Bloomberg

Johnson & Johnson, a Dow stock & Dividend Aristocrat, will stop making & developing heart stents to focus on other stent types.  In a surprise move, JNJ producer of the first drug-coated heart stent, Cypher, will abandon it, with sales barely a quarter of their peak 5 years ago. At the same time, JNJ will cut hundreds of jobs, shutter 2 factories in Puerto Rico & Ireland, & take a charge of $500-$600M in Q2 as it restructures its Cordis heart device business.  "We watched the (drug-coated stent) market continue to evolve over the last several years," with rising competition forcing down prices, Seth Fischer, worldwide group chairman of Cordis said.  "In 2012, we expect to see new (drug-coated stents) come to the market," from 2 & possibly all 3 of its main competitors, Fischer said in explaining J&J's decision.  The stock dropped 94¢ to the 46s after a nice run in Apr.

Pandora (P) shot up to 26 from its IPO price of 16, but settled back to close at 17.42.  That describes the kind of day it was in the stock market.  Resolving Greek debt issues is the main concern for the markets, but right behind is dealing with raising the federal debt ceiling in the US.  Budget cuts will have to be made, a solid negative for GDP growth.  The Dow fell to just above where it was on Mar 18 & is headed to go below the 200 day moving average, considered an important line of support.  For what it's worth, Brown Foreman (BF-B), another Dividend Aristocrat, was up a nickel & another 13¢ after hours, on hopes their Johnny Walker business will be up.

Housing Starts in U.S. Rose 7.2% in March to 549,000 Pace

Photo:  Bloomberg

Builders broke ground on more new homes last month, giving the weak housing market a slight boost at the start of the spring buying season.  Home construction rose 7.2% in Mar from Feb to an annual rate of 549K units according to the Commerce Dept.  Building permits, an indicator of future construction, rose 11.2% after hitting a 5-decade low in Feb.  Still, the building pace is far below the 1.2M units yearly rate considered healthy.  A sign of the battered industry is the number of new homes finished & ready to sell dropped in Mar to a 509K pace units, the lowest level on records dating back to 1968.   Housing remains stuck in the mud.

J&J Says Profit Fell 23% on Consumer Drug, Hip Recalls

Photo:   Bloomberg

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), a Dow stock & Dividend Aristocrat, reported stronger than expected revenue & earnings for Q1, helped by the weaker dollar & higher sales of prescription drugs.  JNJ raised its 2011 profit view, despite recalls that have battered sales of its consumer medicines.  EPS for Q1 was $1.25, below $1.62 last year when there were substantial tax gains.  Excluding special items, JNJ earned $1.35, topping forecasts of $1.26.  Sales rose 3.5% to $16.17B, above $15.84B estimated.  More than 300M packages of Tylenol & other consumer medicines have been recalled in the past 16 months.  Global sales of consumer products fell 2.2% to $3.68M, with US revenue tumbling 14% to $1.35, an improvement from a 29% decline in US sales seen in Q4 2010.  JNJ did not make any reference to reports that it is negotiating to acquire Swiss medical device maker Synthes for about $20B, which would be the biggest deal in its history.  J&J said it now expects earnings of $4.90-5.00 for 2011, up from its earlier view of $4.80-4.90.  The stock liked the news & jumped $1.88 to $62.33.

Greece plans to implement €76B ($110B) in austerity measures & asset sales to meet budget-deficit goals to avoid  restructuring its debt by enacting  €26B in deficit cuts & €50B in asset sales through 2015. The measures will cut the deficit to 1% of GDP by 2015, from a targeted 7.4% this year.  It will sell stakes in the phone, power, gas, gambling companies & airport to raise funds. The sales aim to slash debt by 20 percentage points of GDP by 2015.  Greece will also cut defense spending by €1.2B, reduce public-sector wage costs by €2B & trim spending on pensions by €2.5B.  A crackdown on tax evasion could yield €3.5B.  The measures are aimed at meeting a target, agreed with the EU & IMF as a condition for the bailout.  Despite these reassurances, Greece is still  in trouble.

Merck (MRK) will retain European rights to 2 lucrative arthritis drugs while ceding rights elsewhere to Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), both Dow stocks, & making other concessions as the drugmakers resolved a high-stakes dispute stemming from MRK & Schering-Plough merger.  2010 revenue from these drugs were about $2.8B.  The companies also agreed to divide profits evenly from MRK's distribution of the drugs beginning Jul 1, previously 58% went to MRK & 42% to JNJ. JNJ will also receive a one-time payment of $500M. MRK expects EPS this year in a range of $3.64-$3.76, excluding special items.  JNJ said the agreement would have added nearly $500M in sales last year, but that the impact on 2011 earnings is not expected to be significant.  Each stock rose about 60¢ with charts that have been dragging for more than a year.

Early earnings reports have not been inspiring.  Dow's chart shows it has not been doing much for a few weeks.  Value stocks I watch, Dividend Aristocrats with higher yields among others, have been doing well recently, but not sure how long that enthusiasm will last.  After all, their earnings will be out in a couple of weeks.  We're coming up on the one year anniversary of the market sell-off on Greek debt concerns & Greece is still struggling to deal with its extensive borrowings.  But this time oil looks to be headed to take out its old highs, adding another major worry for investors.
