Oversold markets bounce back

Dow rose 178, advancers over decliners 5-1 & NAZ was up 33.  As has been the case for the last month, bank stocks were market leaders.  The Financial Index had a solid advance, but is still off 6% from its highs at the start of this week.

Fed Lowers Growth Outlook for Next Year, Sees 8.6% Unemploym

Photo:   Bloomberg

Ben Bernanke acknowledges the pace of economic growth is likely to be "frustratingly slow," after the Federal Reserve (FED) downgraded its forecast for the next 2 years.  He said the FED is looking for economic activity & labor market conditions to improve gradually over the next 2 years, but at a sluggish pace.  The FED will use monetary tools if necessary to safeguard the recovery.  The debt crisis in Europe is a particular concern to the FED because it could have adverse effects on confidence & growth.  The FED is closely monitoring the situation.  This was his 3rd news conference this year, a practice he started in Apr in an effort to provide more background on FED actions & its thinking behind its latest economic forecast.

Fed Says Economy Has Picked Up While Still Detecting ‘Significant’ Risks

Greek Prime Minister Papandreou is explaining to his furious European colleagues why he was holding a surprise referendum on a bailout deal that took them all months to work out.  His pledge to let the Greeks vote has riled financial markets & threatens to derail an entire European debt crisis plan that's not even a week old.  Some call it a "back me or sack me" move to make sure the Greek public will support the severe austerity measures.  But a "no" vote would have enormous consequences not just for Greece but for the rest of Europe.  It could lead to a disorderly Greek default, force Greece out of the 17-nation eurozone, topple many fragile European banks & send the global economy spinning back into recession.  French President Sarkozy & German Chancellor Merkel have gathered for private talks ahead of their meeting with Papandreou.  Finance ministers had already approved their portion of a €8B ($11B) aid installment for Greece, but eurozone officials now say that the payout was conditional on additional austerity measures that Greece committed to as part of the new rescue deal.  Can you spell "chaos?"

Clorox, a Dividend Aristocrat, raised prices to combat higher costs as gross margins have been hurt in fiscal Q1.  The higher prices boosted revenue 3% & overall sales volume increased 2% helped from intl growth.  But the higher prices drove down sales volume on many products.  Net income plummeted nearly 40% despite the revenue gain largely because the company benefited in the year-ago period from selling its auto care business.  If that gain was excluded, then net income would have fallen only 7%.  After adjusting for one-time items, EPS was 98¢, beating expectations of 94¢.  Overall revenue of $1.31B edged past expectations of $1.3B.  Its best performing division was intl where revenue grew 9%, helped by expansions in "small emerging countries" in Asia & the Middle East.  But intl revenue makes up about 20% of revenue.  The stock fell 86¢,

In the last 9 trading sessions, Dow has had triple digit swings in all but one of those days.  The VIX, volatility index, chart for the last month shows it remains in very high territory (above 30).  The plan to solve the Greek debt mess looks like it will come unglued.  Leaders will need more Scotch-Tape to patch it together, not a comforting thought.  Meanwhile the super committee in DC is trying to put together a plan to reduce the federal deficit, but with little success.  The stock market is very fragile & high volatility could spell trouble.  I'm surprised that the lack of help by the FED was treated with a sense of equanimity by the markets.

The MLP index blasted thru 350, intent on making it a floor once again, while the REIT index rose almost 1 to the 227s. Junk bond funds were mixed in what has been their worst month since the Lehman collapse almost 3 years ago.  Treasuries gained.  Oil rose, advancing with gasoline & heating oil as East Coast refineries worked to restart after Hurricane Irene & on signs the housing market is stabilizing.  Gold had another solid gain, it may want to take out its recent highs above $1900.  Its chart shows is up about 15% in Aug from buying by nervous investors in what has been a bad month for stocks.

The Federal Reserve (FED) considered a range of actions to help a struggling economy at its Aug meeting, including the unprecedented step of tying the interest rate policy outlook to a specific unemployment level.  Before settling on a promise to keep rates near zero until 2013, which prompted 3 dissents, FED officials noted the economic outlook had worsened significantly, arguing that the weakness seen during the first half of the year could no longer be dismissed as solely temporary.  "Participants noted a deterioration in labor market conditions, slower household spending, a drop in consumer and business confidence and continued weakness in the housing sector," according to minutes from the Aug 9 meeting.  A few members wanted to take even bolder action but, the minutes said, "were willing to accept the stronger forward guidance as a step in the direction of additional accommodation."  At its meeting, the FED discussed a range of tools for additional monetary easing, including engaging in further asset purchases or shifting the composition of bonds on the central bank's portfolio toward longer-dated maturities.  They're confused about the economic recovery like about everybody else!

A Few Fed Policy Makers Favored ‘More Substantial’ Move Aug. 9

Dollar General posted bigger-than-expected gains in Q2 sales & profit & raised the low end of its full-year forecast.  Same-store sales rose 5.9%, a faster clip than the 5.4% in Q1 & the gross margin decline was much narrower than in Q1.  Customers are buying an increasing proportion of lower-margin necessities as they cut back on discretionary purchases due to higher gas prices & high levels of unemployment.  The weak economy is a double-edged sword. As lower-income shoppers seek low-priced food & other basic goods, a soft economy brings new customers into its stores.  DG, with 9600 stores, sales rose 11.2% to $3.6B.  Q2 EPS was 42¢, up from 41¢ last year.  EPS was 52¢, excluding items, above forecasts of 48¢.  Shoppers buying more food & basic goods rather than discretionary items pressures profitability, as those items generally carry a lower gross profits than other goods while prices paid for goods rose due to higher commodity & fuel costs.  DG expects EPS of $2.22-$2.30 for its 53-week fiscal year, versus a prior forecast of $2.20-$2.30 & expects sales to rise 12-14%, up from a prior forecast of 11-13%.  Same-store sales were guided to increase 4-6%, versus an earlier forecast of 3-5%.  The stock is up $1.97 & has done well in 2011.

Carl Icahn Offers $10.3 Billion for Clorox If Auction Fails

Photo:   Bloomberg

Carl Icahn said he would backstop any auction of Clorox, a Dividend Aristocrat, with a $10.3B bid if his slate of nominees were elected to the board after the company's board unanimously rejected 2 offers from Icahn (the largest shareholder).  The shares are trading $8 below the $78 per share offer, indicating investors do not see it happening either.  Icahn said he would fund at least half the purchase price in cash & the rest thru bonds.  The new bonds could sell at a discount to par, making the real offer price unclear.  The stock rose $1.89 to $70.52 & has had gyrations with an upward bias during a rough time for the stock market

If there is any reasoning behind the gains this week, it's on hopes of more economic stimulus.  Of course that is a touchy subject if it's to come from the federal gov which is looking for ways to reduce the whopper size deficits.  It's uncertain what the FED might do to stimulate the economy, especially when the members were divided at the Aug meeting.  The rest of the week will probably feature a lot of shloshing around on low volume, waiting for the jobs number on Fri.

Hewlett-Packard, a Dow stock & the world’s largest personal-computer maker, fell the most in 31 years after unveiling strategic changes, including a possible spinoff of the PC business.  HPQ dropped $6.09, 21%, to $23.42.  Yesterday HPQ said it may spin off the PC business & plans to close its tablet & smartphone hardware unit.  It also agreed to acquire the enterprise software provider Autonomy for about $10.3B.  In addition, HPQ issued sales & profit forecasts for Q3 that missed analysts’ estimates.  Obviously, investors lost confidence in HPQ.

Carl Icahn Seeks to Join Clorox Board

Photo:   Bloomberg

Carl Icahn will seek to install himself & 10 other directors on CLX board after his offer to buy the company was rejected.  He has offered twice since mid-Jul to buy the company, first at $76.50 & then at $80 for about $10.7B.  CEO Don Knauss said earlier this month that Icahn's bids were not credible & undervalued the company.  Icahn has criticized the company's performance & suggested that it accept his bid, shop for competitive offers or take his higher bid to shareholders for a decision.  Earlier this month, CLX reported Q4 net income fell 1% to $169M, or $1.29 per share, as it spent more on advertising but beat most expectations on both profit & revenue.  The stock rose 68¢.

Bank of America Said to Plan 3,500 Job Cuts This Quarter

Photo:   Bloomberg

Bank of America, a Dow stock & the biggest US lender, will eliminate about 3500 jobs in Q3 amid a “challenging time” for the firm & its investors, said CEO Brian Moynihan.  Some already were informed of the firings, which are in addition to 2500 reductions made earlier this year, Moynihan said.   BAC is under pressure to reduce expenses, with a market value that has plunged by about half this year, as losses tied to the 2008 takeover of subprime lender Countrywide Financial mount & revenue shrinks amid signs of a US slowdown.  The stock was up a penny & has a chart that looks dismal (as do most bank stocks).

In pre-market trading Dow was off triple digits, but that pessimism did not last.  Buyers returned & took the Dow into the black, then selling returned.  At least it's doing a lot better than was predicted by the dreary reading during Asian trading last night.  There is nothing new happening & we're going into the 2 weeks prior to Labor Day which are traditionally slow with little movement.  After all, the pres is vacationing at Martha's Vineyard as if he didn't have a care in the world.  With gold reaching new record highs (it wasn't long ago that 1600 was a target for the bulls) & so many financial issues unresolved in the US & Europe, this could be a wild time for the markets.  I have a feeling it won't be dull.  So far Dow fell 1.2K this month, enough to qualify for a bear market reading.
