US consumers were lured to auto showrooms by holiday discounts & may have pushed car sales to the 2nd fastest pace in more than 2 years.  Light-vehicle sales in Dec, set for release tomorrow, may have run at a 13.4M annual rate, up from the 12.5M pace a year earlier.  While the rate would trail the 13.6M pace in Nov, typically a slow sales month, the number of units sold increased in Dec.  Consumer confidence reached an 8-month high in Dec, according to the Conference Board, as carmakers aired holiday ads & continued promotions begun in late Nov.  Ad campaigns brought consumers into showrooms seeking year-end deals.

In a major shift, the Federal Reserve (FED) will start updating the public 4  times a year on how long it plans to keep short-term interest rates at record lows.  The first forecast will be included in its economic projections after the Jan 24-25 meeting.  The change marks the latest move by the FED  to make its communications more open & explicit which could help assure investors, companies & consumers that rates won't rise before a specific time.  It is hoped that this might help lower long-term yields further to lead consumers & businesses to borrow & spend more.  Lower yields on bonds also tend to cause some investors to shift money into stocks, which can boost wealth & spur more spending.

Fed to Make Benchmark Rate Forecasts Public

Stocks began the year with substantial gains.   Manufacturing data was encouraging, but there was more than that to this rally.  Maybe it was because new pension money went into stocks right away.  Dow crashed thru the 12.2K ceiling, wanting to go higher.  Fri will be the last jobs report for 2011 & Mon the DC politicos return.  Let's see how that plays out.  With oil prices over $100, rising tensions in the Mideast are worth watching.

The MLP index fell 1 to the 362s after 2 days of big gains & the REIT index was up 1+ to the 233s following a rough time last week.  Junk bond funds were mixed following losses last week & Treasuries were a little soft.  But the yield on the 10 year Treasury is holding under 3%.  Oil declined for a 2nd day before reports that may show slowing economic growth in the US & China, curbing fuel demand in the world’s 2 largest crude consumers.  Gold dropped to a one-week low on sales by some investors to cover losses in equity markets.

Apple, with the 2nd largest market cap in the world, is feeling the effects of problems from its rapid success.  An employee is starting a drive to unionize retail workers for better wages & benefits & address what are called unfair practices in AAPL glass-and-steel retail showrooms.  This is surprising because unions are largely unheard of in Silicon Valley companies, which are quick-footed & having the flexibility to hire & fire.  AAPL has more than 30K retail employees in 325 stores around the world.  While this may be only a minor problem that will not last long, the company will suffer from growing pains (as have the other industry leaders in technology).  The stock has been in a fairly narrow range (325-360) all year, today it's up 1+ to the 327s.

This is a sleepy kind of day with the VFC acquisition providing much of the excitement.  The problems which dragged down stocks last week (& last 6 weeks) are still out there with no sign of being resolved.  A chart for the Dow covering the last 3 months shows its lackluster performance as it gets ready to go into summer months starting next week.  The  falling price, flirting with 12K, is getting near the 200 moving average.  The technical guys don't want to see it go below as it gets within a couple hundred points.

US crude stockpiles probably rose for a 6th week, the longest series of gains since May, as a glut forms in Cushing, OK, the country’s biggest oil- trading hub.  However oil had one of its biggest daily gains in history as traders are more councerned with events in Libya & the rest of the Mideast.  Gold topped $1,400 an ounce as unrest in the Middle East boosted demand for the precious metal.

Wal-Mart (WMT), a Dow stock & Dividend Aristocrat, gave a Q1 profit & full-year outlook range that suggested it may fall short of expectations based on its view of the global economy. The company also placed top priority on returning sales trends in the US, its largest market, to positive territory. CEO Mike Duke said the company was pleased with Q4 & full-year performance in all 3 of its “operating segments.”  But he also said, the company was disappointed by domestic sales in Q4, with pricing & merchandising issues running “deeper than we initially expected.” Those, he said, “require a response [whose results] will take time to see.” An 11% increase in inventory was also of concern to investors.  Q4 EPS rose to $1.70 from $1.25 a share. Sales in the Jan 31 qtr  rose 2.5% to $115.6B, while membership & other income declined 4.5% to $760M.  Excluding tax benefits of 7¢ a share & other one-time items, WMT would have earned $1.34 a share, beating expectations of $1.31.  WMT forecast Q1 EPS of 91-96¢ & full-year earnings of $4.35-4.50. The stock fell $1.71 to the 53s after doing little over the last 10 years.

Markets have forgotten that stocks go in 2 directions & today was a reminder that profit taking can halt any advance. While this decline was a shock to some, it could represent only expected profit taking in an overbought market that was way overdo. But the less than optimistic forecasts by WMT for 2011 will give even bulls a reason to reassess prospects for the new year.
